Change of Heart? or the Real Michael Rood?

When Michael Rood wrote a letter dated May 31, 2007, it was with an attitude that Jamie Louis needed time away from the business/ministry to recover his health and grief over the loss of his  daughter and Connie's father in a car accident October of 2006.  Nothing was said about having concerns over financial issues on Michael Rood's side. In fact he acknowledged Jamie Louis's concern over finances. Written from Tampa, Florida, May 31, 2007, while on his Jonah Code Tour, Michael Rood stated the changes that were going to take place:

"...After much prayer and after consulting with Jamie two days ago, I have  made the decision that Judith and I will not return to Israel at the end of this summer tour. Instead, I will stay on in the U.S. to assume the responsibilities for day to day ministry operations. Jamie and I are both in agreement that this is necessary at this time.

...As of ... Tuesday night, Jamie will no longer be handling any ministry business other than to ...advise me on any details I may need...When he returns to Oregon, he will not be going into the office....

I am informing the staff immediately so that you can be helpful in this transition. I will also be assembling some trusted advisors and experienced staff to help us facilitate effective organizational changes. We will all need to shoulder more of the load for a while until we can bring in reinforcements. As Jamie recovers, he will eventually assume a new position as 'wartime consigliore' for the ministry.

...We have all depended on Jamie for so long that it will be difficult to wean ourselves from... ...All departments will continue to function as usual with the exception... I will be the one who will call the shots, and I will be the one to go to Jamie when I cannot figure things out. Until I arrive in Oregon, Michele will be directly under me as the office coordinator, ... all activities required of any Oregon office personnel must go through her first.

The usual monthly financial disbursements will be made from the Oregon office by Michele and Nancy who will co-sign disbursements in the place of  Connie...

.... I will need Jamie in prime health so that he can be ready to share at the "vision conference."

...I believe that we can make this work smoothly. Jamie will be focusing on his physical recovery...The ministry will continue to pay his full regular salary, but he is required NOT to work at this time.

 He has already put two lifetimes of labor into this ministry. With due diligence, 'Kemosabe' will be back in the saddle riding another range with me in the near future....." 16

"...The current idea being discussed is to let the temporary corporate sole ‘A Rood Awakening!’ wither and become defunct after all debts have been satisfied.  A new nonprofit corporation with a legitimate board of directors will over see the financial constitution of the ministry.  In this vein, I have asked Don as the Chief executive officer to immediately implement and oversee the financial accounting system that Pam Harris will administer. Don will also secure an accountant ...to have us qualified under the Evangelical Accounting Association standards...

3.  Having proven the practical impracticality of our road tours as of this spring and summer, we will now focus on a necessary pastoral role in introducing more teachers and printed materials though several regional conferences though out the United States, and hopefully other countries as well.  We will raise up a staff of younger and more energetic people to properly produce these life changing spiritual adventures in the form of three or four day restoration conferences.  Jamie Louie and his family will be a vital part ..."  17. 

Since Michael Rood has repeatedly called all Christians pagan, the Person and Name of Jesus as pagan, rejects the deity of Christ, and doesn't recognize pastors, does it not seem slightly hypocritical to now want to be under the oversight of the Evangelical Accounting Association? Yes, he has Christianized some of his material in order to draw on the Sky Angel, Christian Booksellers and similar crowds, but that does not mean his core beliefs have changed.

"...We soon learned, through a recorded phone conversation secured by a private investigator, that two men in the ministry had been plotting for several months to vilify Michael in order to hide some apparent financial misdealings...An obscure Arizona corporation in the name of A Rood Awakening! in which all bank accounts, phone services, postal service contracts and vehicles donated to the ministry were put in the personal name, and under the exclusive control of the one man..." 18.

The panel reported on the alleged tampering (by Michael Rood) of an audio tape of the Advisory Board Meeting, July 26, 2007, with all parties stating they knew they were being recorded. The audio tape, which, according to the information provided, displays the editing work done on the tape, posted to Michael Rood's website, reallyrood.com. The Oregon office of course has the original tape. According to various statements on the panels page, it is illegal to post a recorded conversation to the public, without full permission of those involved.  19

"27. In 2004, Michael and Judith Rood, Defendant, and others attended an A Rood Awakening meeting in the State of Washington. 28. At the Washington meeting, Defendant recommended for the first time that A Rood Awakening incorporate as a “corporate sole” in the State of Arizona.  29.  At the Washington meeting, Michael Rood learned that Defendant had, in fact, already organized A Rood Awakening as an Arizona corporate sole, even though he had neither the permission nor the authority to do so. ...31. Michael Rood informed Defendant that he had no authority to decide where to deposit money generated by the business and that he was to provide an accounting to Pam Harris, comptroller, and relinquish any control over any company financial account or matter." 21

Jamie Louis submitted the Annual Report August 16, 2007. It had been due on or before June 25, 2007. In it he stated that A Rood Awakening! Ministries "had no receipts in the State of Arizona. There were no assets or liabilities in Arizona in 2006." That would be so, since the business was not run in Arizona nor were there any seminars booked there. However, the financial statements do show a tad bit more than 'no assets or liabilities'. 22

It is more than a little noteworthy that the bylaws for the Arizona corporate sole state that aside from the claim of being a church, there is the claim in it's objectives as being, "A Rood Awakening! Ministries is involved with providing shelter for people in need of protection from the elements, clothing for people in need of warmth, food for the hungry and drink for those with thirst...education and training in....personal hygiene, agriculture and related sciences, security of mind, body and spirit...." 23

" ...Judith and I went to Glenn’s in Muskegon for two days and I felt a resounding spiritual thud.  There was nothing there.  I drove to Grand Rapids after a couple of days with my parent’s for dad’s 75^th birthday. When we arrived in Grand Rapids something took place that was completely unexpected.  The moment that a 3000 square foot office and a huge space for a video studio opened before my eyes, ..." 23a

"...When I got up to Michigan and was with Glenn, we prayed for that same miracle that we would know this is where we're supposed to be. And, after a couple of days with Glenn, we went to visit my parents - my father's 75th birthday transpired and then we went over to Grand Rapids to visit a long time ministry friend. And before we got here, I believe it was really a couple weeks earlier, this friend said that part of his building he was gonna lease out to Aloette Glass Corporation, but the deal fell through and he said, this place would be perfect for you. ...Now it's at least two weeks later. Judith and I go over to Grand Rapids just to drop in to visit him and we went over to his place of business...." 23b 

The documented fiasco of alleged mail fraud via a letter and postal information was dated July 22, 2007 and was presented by Don Harris and signed by Michael Rood. Don Harris went into the Oregon post office, and attempted to redirect all A Rood Awakening! Ministries mail to the new Michigan address, for the new A Rood Awakening! Ministries International corporation.

Michael Rood wrote many statements from July forward that he was broke, had no money, no email or adherents lists, and no way to communicate. In his November 2007 Newsletter he stated:

"...This means that I no longer have any of your personal letters to me. I don't even have your email addresses or phone numbers. We do have an old list of some addresses and yours is among them. I felt that contacting you was important enough to borrow money to send this letter..." 23c

"...Rood's ministry organization was based in my home state of Oregon, and I had accepted an assignment to produce the Rood newsletter on a contract basis, I was an eyewitness to much of what occurred. Many are familiar with the monthly mailings "sent" by the Rood organization; these were actually produced, printed, and mailed by my organization (I had the complete mailing list).

When Michael Rood subsequently broke with (and inaugurated legal proceedings against) the administrator of the ministry, one Jamie Louis, I unsuccessfully offered to mediate the conflict.

Another Messianic Jewish believer in Yahshua, Jamie Louis had run the ministry on behalf of Rood for some time, and predictably, the fight began over money - and lots of it. ... Mr. Louis recognized my capabilities in ministry data management, and asked if I could revamp Michael Rood's regular mailings. I enthusiastically accepted.

... As I've long believed that God has given us significant revelation related to prophecy, I was delighted to have the opportunity to send complimentary copies of our publications to a group of believers that might otherwise never read our material.

I had already printed multiple editions of the Rood monthly newsletter when Michael and Jamie came into conflict, and Rood subsequently brought in another ministry figure, a man named Don Harris, to attempt to regain control of the official ministry known as A Rood Awakening, during an ensuing power struggle.

...During the fracas, ... I realized I was probably the only person who actually had a clear understanding of the Rood ministry database in terms of numbers, regular supporters, how current the addresses were, and so forth. ...

When Don Harris assumed the helm of a hastily restructured Rood organizational structure (which included a move to Michigan from Oregon), one of his first acts was to contact me to discuss the status of the ministry database. Don wanted a copy of the database, and as he was represented as the new General Manager of Michael Rood's ministry, I complied.

In the apparent hope of some degree of continuity, I was then asked to publish a ministry mailing to Michael's supporters on behalf of the new ministry structure in Michigan. This occurred in August 2007. Because my own direct mail activities are constantly updating the various databases in my possession, when I was also asked by Don ... to produce another mailing ...I did my best to effectively utilize the most recent data relative to all Rood ministry supporters.

Further, I personally supervised the printing, envelope stuffing, sealing, sorting, labeling, etc for the first Rood newsletter after the restructuring, in a critical effort to ask his supporters to continue to help him through the difficult period. Once again, this was in August 2007. I was also involved in direct mail for Michael's speaking tours, as well as a November 2007 printing and direct mail program.

It should be noted that lists are updated daily here, and even though we mailed a sample of our materials to names on the Rood list, ...Because good mailing list management requires methodical maintenance (people move, the post office sends back undeliverable letters, etc), not knowing if we would produce another newsletter for the new organization, we continued to maintain the Rood list.

Shortly after the November newsletter project was completed, a Rood staffer named Rashel Kammerling contacted me. She had been assigned to interact with me on the newsletter and database projects, and realizing the Rood list I used for the November mailing was more up to date than the one given to Don Harris in August, she asked for a copy of the database. I sent it to her at the Rood Michigan offices shortly thereafter.

Over the course of the next year, as I began to study various aspects of the Messianic Jewish movement in earnest, I was horrified to learn just how apostate Michael Rood's doctrine actually is. ...

I've since learned that significant portions of what is called the "Hebrew Roots" movement have been transformed into an integral component of the Antichrist deception of our time.

...In the fall of 2007, when Michael Rood reconfigured his Rood Awakening ministry, and filed a lawsuit against Jamie Louis... I completed the previously mentioned printing assignments for the new Rood organization and then severed my professional association with the ministry. ... Michael's suit against Jamie Louis was settled out of court with a "gag order." ...

...However, his July 2008 statements, in writing, are so completely inaccurate they demand a refutation. In an insert in his newsletter, Rood characterizes the break with his former friends as an attempt to "Stop Rood" - as though the break with his former associates was a sinister effort to stop his ministry activities

...In this same July 2008 letter to his mailing list, Michael Rood clearly seeks to manipulate his clientele into financial support by claiming he had been "cut off" from contact with those supporters due to this supposed "twisted" plan to "Stop Rood." Claiming he has had no way to contact his supporters through the last year, he writes

"From that heartbreaking day last July until now, I have been unable to contact you or any of my other friends who have stood with me through the years..."

On September 3, 2007, an email was sent out to members of an "old list", which is odd that was mentioned immediately after stating he had no lists. In that email he described events in a slightly different manner than what the Louis camp has presented the events:

"On July 21, 2007, under the cover of the Sabbath, a formerly trusted friend hired a locksmith to change the locks on the A Rood Awakening!! U.S. office. He brought in a computer specialist who disconnected the server containing all the contribution and personal records of Michael Rood's ministry partners...

We soon learned, through a recorded phone conversation secured by a private investigator, that two men in the ministry had been plotting for several months to vilify Michael in order to hide some apparent financial misdealings...An obscure Arizona corporation in the name of A Rood Awakening! in which all bank accounts, phone services, postal service contracts and vehicles donated to the ministry were put in the personal name, and under the exclusive control of the one man...

Michael and Judith Rood's cell phones, as well as the cell phones of all of his Israel and U.S. road crew, were soon disconnected, and they were left without any way to access even their families, let alone the thousands of friends who have been faithful supporters of Michael's ministry through the years.  Michael's entire staff was immediately cut off financially and stranded on the road..

...You must be aware that Michael Rood has been completely cut off from the ARoodAwakening.tv  and MichaelRood.com websites, any and all donations, product orders, and all A Rood Awakening! information accounts....

Apparently the private investigator has no name and no contact information and has made no public statement. In fact, later episodes of letters eliminated the term Private investigator, because, according to the Jamie Louis camp, one of the board members accidentally sent the wrong audio to Don Harris. As far as Michael Rood's inability to have contact and drum up money and support so to speak, he seems to have done fairly well, since he had his new website up and running by Mid-August, with his son-in-law, Eric Fransen as technical contact.

On November 21, 2007, Michael Rood wrote an email which in the opening information painted a completely different picture of the last 6 months, from being totally broke to being extremely able to travel both in the United States and abroad:

"...I have continued without interruption in my work to take the gift of Yahweh's
revelations to people who have never heard them. This is the ministry Yahweh gave into my responsibility long before the eruptions of this tumult ever transpired. Throughout this time, I have taken the "Jonah Code" to Texas, Alabama, Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, California, Israel, Norway
and Iceland. My wife Judith and I have been on the road non-stop..." 25

"...We are currently in Florida on our East Coast Jonah Code Tour. The Tour was launched in Waco, Texas, and continued through Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina, and finally to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By the time you receive this update the speaking Tour will, for the most part, be over. We are planning an event in Albuquerque August 1st and 2nd, the western slope of Colorado August 8th and 9th, and in Southern California September 9th and 10th!..." 26

"...Satan's plan to "cut Rood's throat" involved the confiscation and "fire sale" of the equipment that was given to this ministry for the specific purpose of producing live seminars on the Internet...." 27

I think we can scratch Albuquerque, New Mexico as having heard his message as that is where Michael Rood pulled out in the vehicle which was registered in his name and with the ARA equipment loaded into the trailer (which was in Jamie Louis' name) in the early morning, and then the meeting was canceled. 28   

From the alleged audio tampering done by Michael Rood, a statement by Jamie Louis noted that the 'Excursion" (a recent model Ford van) was in Michael's name.

How can someone who has claimed to live like a levite, to being a true levite and claimed to own nothing, own something? Jamie Louis and others stated in the many fundraising letters for Michael that he lived as a levite.

"...Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Levite. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Levite. Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Levite..." 6001.com/news_sp08.htm > 2001

"...Michael lives to teach and lives his life as if he were a Levite...Michael has never asked for money in any of his newsletters to help support his ministry.   He lives as a Levite.  He does not own a car or even rent an apartment..." www.michaelrood.com/news_sp07.htm >2003

"...He lives like a Levite, owning no property and having no inheritance (Numbers 18:23), surviving only on the tapes and videos he sells during his presentations, which he believes is as things should be (Deuteronomy 26:12). He has literally devoted his entire life to his mission. ..."  29   

A letter was posted on a Messianic forum by a member, who stated that this was a letter sent by Michael Rood to him in response to his questions:

"... I don't own a house. I have no life insurance. I have no car insurance. I rode busses in Jerusalem at the time they were being blown up every week. I get no paycheck. I have not had a vacation in 10 years. I get room and board just like everyone else on my staff..." "  30  

One can presume that the statement of Michael Rood never asking for money in 2003, has changed dramatically, since his new website is plastered with requests for money, with ads for  PayPal, Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express cards showing the means with which to donate to him. Of course he has asked for money before, despite the statement of him not asking for money. Those Levite statements are in sharp contrast to that which has now become the public statement of Lee Ware Alon, who was staff in Israel.

"...For example, the difference between the picture Michael would paint publicly of his own poverty, sacrifice, and hardship while living in relative opulence and luxury in a beautiful home overlooking the Galilee in Israel..."

...I was asked, by Michael, to personally import a vehicle earmarked for the "Rood Crew" and production needs, which was instead used exclusively as a personal vehicle of Michael and Judith. I was intentionally deceived in this matter by Michael and Judith to procure my help with the Israeli government so they could avoid tax liability..." 31

"...With regard to that specific charge, this committee did find evidence of impropriety by the standards of general accounting principles and common business practice. Specifically, Michael Rood received cash funds and checks written to “Michael Rood” from the offering boxes that were not deposited to the ARA ministry account. ...With regard to his compensation, Michael Rood received deposits paid by ARA to his US bank and an Israel bank account (using another person’s name). He also had the use of a ministry credit card that was paid by ARA. All of the ARA payments to these accounts were made without Michael supplying expense reports." 32

The two financial statements that have been publicly posted show an income of over 1 million dollars for 2006, and another million from January to July in 2007.  The fact that Michael Rood was given $80,000 in 2006, with the appearance of all expenses paid, gives one the impression that some statements simply are not kosher. Connie Moser stated in her financial report that, Michael Rood wrote cheques which bounced, and large amounts had to be paid on Michael's credit card transactions, without his submitting receipts, which were then allocated in the books as miscellaneous expenses. 33

Over $80,000 was paid to Michael Rood for services in 2006 according to the financial statements posted for the public, and by all appearances, rent and any other expenses were covered by the A Rood Awakening! Ministries office.  33

This begs the question, whose idea was it to deposit Michael Rood's money into another person's account in Israel, instead of being paid to him directly as is required both in Israel and also for US IRS requirements? 33 

"...Methods of Reporting Funds when Entering or Leaving Israel 2001), starting from Sunday February 17, 2002, reporting of transfer of money into or out of the country is required by law, as described below. For the purpose of reporting, "money" refers to cash, bank checks and travelers' checks...."  34

Obligation to Report

The law obligates every person entering Israel or leaving Israel who carries with him money ("money" here refers to cash. Bank and traveler's checks), must report these upon entering to Israel or exiting from Israel, if the combined sum is 80,000 New Israeli Shekels (NIS) or higher (If the person entering the country is a new immigrant, according to the law of Return 19504, he/she must report if the individual or combined sum exceeds 1,000,000) NIS.

Violation to Report

Violation of the obligation to report is an offense for which the penalty is 6 months imprisonment or a fine as stated in Paragraph 61(A)(4) to the Penal Law, or ten times the amount which was not declared, whichever sum is higher. ..."  35

In a 2006 radio interview with Jan Michelson in Iowa, with Jamie Louis also in attendance, Michael Rood was asked if he was an Israeli citizen. Rood responded that his wife was a citizen and he was a "journalist", and (Jan asked) "...you look like an observant Jewish Rabbi like you are a practicing..." (Rood): Lubavitcher?", and then Rood stated that both he and Jamie were "Israelites", [we] "are Jews", "we're not ancient Israelites". 36 

It was during that same interview, that Michael Rood left the impression that he was from Israel, by stating:

"Monday broadcast:
Sid Roth introduces Michael as a Messianic Jewish Rabbi - ****which he never disputes or corrects.***
Sid introduces Michael as having a Baptist heritage and as a young man went to see "Fiddler on the Roof".  ...

....One of my great, great-grandfathers came over as a horse back riding circuit rider with John Wesley,  but my family are from Spain, originally Sephardic Jews.  Most of the Roods went from Spain to Holland. 

4. From the same article > September 29, 1997, in another promotional brochure, also entitled "From Here To Eternity," Michael Rood also made the following biographical claims. ....

"Michael John Rood is an ordained nondenominational Christian minister and Messianic rabbi. "Rood" is the ancient English word for the "Cross of Messiah" given to Michael's British ancestors after their conversion to Christianity."

Since Michael Rood has stated that as a non citizen, he was a journalist living in Israel, then it might behoove Mr. Rood to present his Israeli Press Card as well as his work visa publicly as validation of his alleged occupation. After doing a minor amount of research on what it takes to acquire these press credentials as well as a work visa in Israel, I personally believe that it would be extremely hard for a non citizen of Israel to get these privileges issued to them, without extensive supporting documentation of work related history as well as validation of articles published in Israel. Anyone can claim to be a journalist, but that does not mean that they are recognized by the state of Israel as such. 37 .

All journalists operating in the country must be accredited by the Israeli Government Press Office (GPO). 38

"It seemed surreal, as Jamie proudly boasted that he "IS" "A Rood Awakening!. Jamie Louis, with the help of his co-conspirators, had seized control of what they thought was the "ministry". But the "ministry" is not bricks and mortar--is is Spirit. It is HIS message and HIS mission that HE has ordained me to carry out on this earth.

...These men thought they could fire me from the ministry that the Almighty assigned to me. ...

Despite the conspiracy to "stop Rood", we are going to move ahead with plans to make all my teaching materials available free of charge on the Internet, so that we can reach the world with The Gospel of the Kingdom...."

...P.S. One of the most important teachings of my life, Yahshua's First and Last Message to Israel,...which I would love to send to you -but frankly, I'm broke!. Please write and request this profound prophetic teaching and please pray about sending an offering to us to help us recover from this hostile takeover." 39

 "...We produced various products, including a 10-hour video production called Count Down to 6001. On this video, Michael was predicting that in September 1999, the 7th millennium would begin. He predicted that this day would be Tishri 10, 6001, which would be the Day of Atonement and the start of the last seven years before Armageddon....

When Michael’s prophecy failed, he became depressed and went into seclusion in a cave in Tekoa, Israel. After a week, I was able to convince him that we had much work to do and that the message, without predicting the specific date, was still good and needed to be told.  We returned to America and started our “A Rood Awakening!!” tours...." 40
