The Promise Keepers Ambassador do's and don'ts regarding what Biblical issues they are allowed to discuss and how is contained in these thoughts.

"Answering Doctrinal and Denominational Questions and Challenges:

  1. Promise Keepers is dedicated to uniting men through their common commitment to Christ, consistent with that commitment, our Purpose Statement and Statement of Faith have been carefully worded to give you tools to answer questions that arise as you contact churches and pastors on behalf of Promise Keepers. Remember as you are going out that you are not representing yourself and your personal stands on a doctrinal issue, but representing our unique mission and participating in the task of uniting men
  1. Our purpose statement is "PROMISE KEEPERS IS A CHRIST-CENTERED MINISTRY DEDICATED TO UNITING MEN THROUGH VITAL RELATIONSHIPS TO BECOME GODLY INFLUENCE IN THEIR WORLD."
  2. Our statement of faith is as follows:
  1. We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  2. We believe that the Bible is God's written revelation to man, and that it is verbally inspired, authoritative, and without error in the original manuscripts.
  3. We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, sinless life, miracle, death on the cross to provide for out redemption, bodily resurrection, and ascension into heaven, present ministry of intercession for us, and His return to earth in power and glory.
  4. We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, that He performs the miracle of the new birth in an unbeliever and indwells believers, enabling them to live a godly life.
  5. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. That alienation can be removed only by accepting through faith God's gift of salvation which was made possible by Christ's death.(1994 Promise Keepers Ambassadors: Answering Doctrinal and Denominational Questions and Challenges)

5. Revised. 1996. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. That alienation can be removed only by accepting through faith alone God's gift of salvation which was made possible by Christ's death.

5. Revised. 1997. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but because of sin, was alienated from God. Only through faith, trusting in Christ alone for salvation which was made possible by His death and resurrection, can that alienation be removed.

  1. Use the purpose and statements of faith to answer questions.
  1. Avoid going outside the purpose statement as you are approached with questions.
  1. Example one: What is Promise Keepers going to do about all the single mothers in our country? You might answer, If you look at our purpose statement you will see that we are called to uniting men in vital relationships. As we do that we are a finding that men find out what it is to live a godly life as a godly man and in doing so will begin to meet the needs of single mothers.
  2. Example two: Isn't Promise Keepers really anti-gay? You might answer: Our statement of faith clearly states that we feel the Bible is the word of God, so in areas where clearly speaks to an issue we must agree with it, Our purpose clearly states that we are about uniting men; therefore it follows that men struggling with homosexuality are welcome at our gatherings.
  1. Using the statement of faith in doctrinal issues.
  1. Example one: What does Promise Keepers teach about speaking in Tongues? If you look at our statement of faith we have chosen not to address that issue. That is something you should ask your pastor about. If the questioner is a pastor, you should tell him that he as the pastor should determine what his church teaches in that area.
  2. Example two: Does Promise Keepers really believe that Jesus was God? You should answer something like this. The first statement in our Statement of faith clearly states that we believe that Jesus is God. We feel that fact is foundational to the Christian faith in order for someone to join with us it would be necessary for him to agree with that fact.

C. Some of the issues that should not be addressed.

  1. Eternal security
  2. The gifts of the spirit
  3. Baptism
  4. Pre tribulation or post tribulation
  5. Sacraments or ordinances

In conclusion, the task before you is to communicate who Promise Keepers is by using our mission statement and statement of faith. By doing this you will be able to distinguish those that are clearly outside the Christian faith and yet include those who might differ on some doctrinal issues. Remember that our mission is to unify men. We have found that it is best not to address doctrinal issues unless compelled to. We expect you to be committed to your denominational heritage, but this is not the time to proudly wear your colors."
