The British Israel /Christian Identity Connection

Many view the Welsh revival as an incredible move of God, coinciding with the 'awakening' with Parham and the Azusa Street revivals. However, like every revival in the last centuries claiming to be a move of God, the churches were empty after the emotional fervor died. That has consistently happened in Wales, Europe, Azusa Street, the "evangelical awakening" and the Jesus Movement.

If the move of God is real in a persons heart, they will root and grow, not fall away when the excitement and signs die, which is exactly the Scriptural teaching of the Parable of the Sower.

Matthew 13:18-23

"Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

Someone who knows the Lord Jesus and is rooted will endure to the end, because Jesus Himself is the author and finisher of our faith.

Hebrews 12:2-3

"Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds."

Although Evan Roberts suffered a nervous breakdown a few months into the Welsh Revival of 1904, some of his converts besides “…George & Stephen Jeffrey's” include”…David Powell Williams, the founder of the Apostolic Pentecostal church. It is also worth mentioning its effect on Rees Howells, intercessor and founder of the Bible College of Wales and David Lloyd George, who later became the British Prime Minister….” 63

George Jeffreys, the founder of the Elim Movement, was also a British Israelite:

“…on the honor roll of Pentecostal Evangelists and Churchmen of Britain …He was the founder of the Elim Pentecostal Movement of Britain, comparable to The Foursquare Pentecostal Church of America, and subsequently the Bible Pattern Church Fellowship. No man in modern times, up to the time of Billy Graham, ever spoke to larger crowds than did this great evangelist. He filled the greatest halls and auditoriums in Britain. Upon his death tributes came from all over, especially among Pentecostal leaders, praising this man as an outstanding evangelist and church man."

"What is of significance to Kingdom believers is that Jeffreys' was a strong and committed believer in our Israel identity. He gave strong witness to this truth all through his ministry. Students who attended the Bible College, which his church started, were told the truth on the matter."

One article by Jeffreys, which has been given wide circulation is called "Three Schools of Thought." In this he tells us there are only three schools of thought concerning Israel; one, that the Jews are all Israel; second, that the Church is the inheritor of the promises made to Israel and should be called the spiritual Israel; three, that the Anglo-Saxons and kindred peoples are Israel. Jeffreys leaves no doubt as to his belief in the third position." 64

The very ecumenical Aimee Semple McPherson worked with George Jeffreys. The Dictionary of Pentecostal & Charismatic Movements states that, “…Her vision was interdenominational from the start, and the cornerstone of Angelus Temple was inscribed to read that the Temple was dedicated to 'the cause of interdenominational and world-wide evangelism'" 65.

Although having committed adultery and twice-divorced, McPherson was well followed. Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel, had been raised in the Foursquare Church, although he states he never met Aimee Semple McPherson. “… I did not know Mrs. MacPherson. She had died before I ever went to Bible School. I do remember her coming to the Foursquare Church in Ventura when I was a small boy. That is the church my parents first attended, later we moved to Santa Ana where we also attended the Foursquare church. A couple of times we went to the Christmas Oratorio's at Angeles Temple when I was a child, but seeing her from the 1st balcony was as close as I ever got…” 74.

However, while Chuck Smith himself never formally met Aimee, his wife was closely tied to Aimee’s ministry. Chuck Smith Jr. writes, “My mother sat under Aimee's ministry, even played in the band, and later on (after Aimee's controversial death) worked in the central offices there at Angeles Temple. However, to my knowledge, she never met Ms McPherson, and neither did my father…” 75

Chuck Smith Jr. states that his dad broke from the Pentecostal roots, although not theologically. “…Bear in mind, my Dad at the time was no more than twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old. He was still deeply immersed in the Pentecostal subculture and tended to see life and interpret it through that kind of a lens. He later made a significant break from his Pentecostal roots (culturally, though not necessarily theologically)…” 76.

Either one is a Pentecostal or not. You either embrace the teachings of the founders, some of which are named in the Seek God articles, or you reject it all. It's that simple. While many Pentecostals finger point at Toronto or Pensacola, they are part of the same belief system of people like Dr. Cho, Peter Wagner, and those listed in Shepherds in Disguise and the other articles in this series.

Galatians 5:9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.

Daniel Mark Epstein writes in  “Sister Aimee: The Life of Aimee Semple McPherson,” of her background with Jeffreys.

"She called her religion the Foursquare Gospel, after a vision she had in Oakland in 1922. Aimee was preaching on the prophet Ezekiel's vision of Man, Lion, Ox and Eagle, when suddenly she began to shake with emotion. She  saw  in the mysterious symbols 'a complete Gospel for body, for soul, for spirit and eternity.' ... Those four cornerstones -- Regeneration, Baptism in the Spirit, Divine Healing, and the Second Coming -- upheld an evangelistic association called the Elim Foursquare Gospel Alliance, which George Jeffreys founded in Ireland in 1915. He and his brother Stephen were England's greatest evangelists after Wesley and Whitefield, and Aimee had worked with Jeffreys. The Elim Foursquare Gospel influenced the American Assemblies of God, which embraced the same four principles before Aimee had her vision in Oakland in 1922." 66

From a British Israelite site we see the same symbolism found in McPherson’s vision.

“Instead of trying to identify each tribe as a specific modern nation, we note that ancient Israel traveled in four brigades of three tribes each (see the on-line tract, "What Is The Gospel?" -listed under Bible Doctrines, and also the reference given there to Alfred Edersheim's "History of the Old Testament.") Each of these brigades had a dominant tribe; these were: Judah, Ephraim, Reuben, and Dan. These four tribes provided four chief emblems: Lion, Ox or Unicorn, Man, and Eagle or Serpent. To quote briefly from W.H. Bennett, "Of the twenty-two tribal emblems of ancient Israel, at least nineteen still are, or until very recently have been, emblems of one or another section of the Celto-Saxon people. We also noted that, of the four Brigade emblems, two, the lion and the Eagle, are the chief emblems of Britain and the United States; that another, the Man, is a prominent feature of the official Arms of Denmark, Iceland and Greece; and that the Ox is also common to the heraldry of several sections of the Celto-Saxons. So all four of Israel's Brigade emblems are in use among the Celto-Saxons today."  67.

The Free Mason Grand Lodge in Britain had its coat-of-arms and symbolism designed like the Jewish mercaba, the ox, lion, eagle and man. The mercabah symbols involved are still very sacred to some Jews. We have discussed in depth that Mercabah mystics were Kabalists in the series: To Embrace Hebrew Roots.

"The term Mercaba also is very sacred in another aspect. Referring to  the conception of Freemasonry in England in the 1600's and the associated symbols, the following is noted. " Thus it is said that in the preceding century the coat-of-arms now used by Grand Lodge had been designed by an Amsterdam Jew, Jacob Jehuda Leon Templo, colleague of Cromwell's friend the Cabalist, Manasseh ben Israel. 1. To quote Jewish authority on this question, Mr Lucien Wolf writes that Templo "had a monomania for…everything relating to the Temple of Solomon and the Tabernacle of the Wilderness. He reconstructed gigantic models of both of these edifices."2. … At any rate, the masonic coat-of-arms still used by Grand Lodge of England is undoubtedly of Jewish design." "This coat," says Mr. Lucien Wolf, " is entirely composed of Jewish symbols," and is an attempt to display heraldically the various forms of the Cherubim pictured to us in the second vision of Ezekiel---an Ox, a Man, a Lion, and an Eagle---and thus belongs to the highest and most mystical domain of Hebrew symbolism. " 3."In other words, this vision, known to the Jews as the "Mercaba,"4.belongs to the Cabala, where particular interpretation is placed on each figure so as to provide an esoteric meaning not perceptible to the uninitiated. 5.The masonic coat-of-arms is thus entirely Cabalistic; as is also the seal on the diplomas of Craft Masonry, where another Cabalistic figure, that of the man and woman combined, is reproduced. 6."

This Mercaba symbol of the ox, man, lion and eagle are the same symbols used for British Israel, George Jeffrey's Elim Movement, and Aimee Semple Mcpherson's Foursquare.

We were recently thrilled to see the Canadian British Israel movement prohibited from having a conference in one Hotel in Toronto, Canada.  David Lethbridge reported in “Ontario British-Israel Convention Shut Down” that on September 15-19, 1999, the Canadian British-Israel Association was scheduled to hold its 43rd Annual Convention in London, Ontario, but got booted from the arranged Conference Hall. Lethbridge affirms the foundations of British Israelism and states:

“…British-Israelism is a religious doctrine first elaborated in 19th century England as a justification for British colonialism. It claimed that the English Anglo-Saxons were one of the so-called "ten lost tribes of Israel," and that the British monarch was the direct descendant of "the throne of King David." In short, the British were "God's Chosen People." The British-Israel movement spread to Canada and the US at the turn of the century…. The Canadian British-Israel Association (CBIA), through its Internet website, sells a wide variety of white racist and anti-Jewish religious propaganda. At least 40 of its books are by Howard Rand and Destiny Publishers. Rand was the major figure in establishing British-Israelism in the United States in the 1920s and 1930s…” http://www.bethune.w-3productions.com/documents/convention.html

British Israelism spawned the Christian Identity movement, which was incorporated in Los Angeles in 1948. Spawned from it are the Posse Comitatus, Aryan Nations, The Christian Patriot branch, The Committee of the States, the Unorganized Militia and other white supremacy swill.

“…Wesley Swift's Church of Jesus Christ Christian was initially a racist sect which became Christian Identity. The central belief in Identity doctrine is the existence of two races on earth: a godly white race descended from Adam and a satanic race fathered by Satan. Swift, a Klan leader and preacher at Amy Semple McPherson's Foursquare Church in Los Angles, was never able to make much of a success out of his doctrine, but it attracted several people who became central to what was later named "Christian Identity": San Jacinto Capt, William Potter Gale and Richard Girnt Butler."

"Capt was a California Klan leader and a believer in British Israelism, a doctrine which holds that the Israelites of the Bible are not the Jews, but rather Aryan/Anglo-Saxons. Gale was a stock-broker and former Army officer who briefly served on Gen. MacArthur's staff in the Philippines. Gale in turn recruited Butler to Swift's church during the 1950's. In 1970, Swift died, triggering a dispute between Gale and Butler. Ultimately, Butler assumed control and moved the church to Idaho, where he renamed it Aryan Nations - Church of Jesus Christ Christian.” 69.

Along with Charles Parham, William Branham, reportedly also KKK, taught the “two seed” theory. "Now remember, Satan's son was Cain..." "Now remember that Eve got pregnant by Satan, and in the same day..." 70.

The "two seed" theory can be found in a number of variations, however it,  “…is the central tenet of Identity doctrine and the basic justification for Christian Patriots' racism and anti-Semitism. The essence of the "two seed" theory is that there are two races on earth: one godly and one satanic.”

“According to the racist and anti-Semitic "two seed" theory, the white "Adamic" peoples descended from the union of Adam and Eve. But there was also another race beginning with Cain whose father was not Adam, but Satan -- who mated with Eve in the guise of a serpent. The descendants of Cain became known as the Jews. The Adamic peoples became the Aryans or Anglo-Saxons. The Pre-Adamic (non-white) races were not human at all, but descendants of the "beasts of the fields" described in Genesis, without souls and no more than cattle in the eyes of their Aryan betters. All three races could interbreed, but the non-Adamic blood acted like a poison to exterminate the Aryan race. In the eyes of white supremacists, race-mixing became a Satanic plot to exterminate God's chosen people, the white race.”

“By the "two seed" theory, Jesus was not a Jew, but an Aryan. The Adamic (Aryan) people were the lost tribes of Israel, fled to northern Europe and later became the Christian nations. There are many corollaries to the "two seed" theory which provide justification for racists to claim God's favor…”71

Obviously these teachings are totally against the Word of God. From the Pamphlet, Signs of the Supernatural, a quote from a1961 Voice, the magazine of the Full Gospel Business Men International, which said, “…'In Bible Days, there were men of God who were Prophets and Seers. But in all the Sacred records, none of these had a greater ministry than that of William Branham.”

We are not suggesting that Pentecostals, Charismatics or any of the other groups we've mentioned in general are in agreement with these false teachings.

We must ask, however, How could those in leadership in the founding Pentecostal, Charismatic and Full Gospel Business Men movements, those mentioned in “Shepherds in Disguise,” and those throughout these articles approve of such as this? Were or are they in agreement? How can these be embraced by any who love the Lord Jesus Christ? How can any embrace the Roots and subsequent movements of any of these groups that have been built on the teachings of those discussed ? How can there be a unity of all denominations based on these foundations and beliefs? This cannot be what Paul spoke of in

1 Corinthians 1:10

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.”

The false teachings mentioned above and the failure to love one another is evident. Our evaluation must be based on the Word of God. Jesus’ own words are clear as to what it means if someone does not keep His Words or love “ his brother.”

 1 John 3:10-11

“In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother. For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”

Jesus said in John 13: 34-35 “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Jesus said in John 15:14  “Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”

There is no Scripture that would allow us to embrace or build on the aforementioned foundations of heresy. Many obviously will have no idea of the facts of Charles Parham, British Israelism and so on. However, there are those who appear to have obscured these facts.

Psalm 97:10 “Ye that love the Lord, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.”
