Full Version: Alma: Virgin or Young Woman?

In Isaiah 7:14 the word "virgin" has come to something different by some in the Hebrew Roots movement saying that it means "young woman/maiden" instead. The choice of "young woman" or "maiden" appears in some Hebrew Roots versions of the Bible - like the Complete Jewish Bible and the ISR [The Scriptures].

KJV
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

KJV
Matt 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

The question is why reject 'virigin' as the meaning?

Let's look at when and how virgin is used as examples of meaning:

Gen 24:16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.

Gen 24:16 And the damselH5291 was veryH3966 fairH2896 to look upon,H4758 a virgin,H1330 neitherH3808 had any manH376 knownH3045 her: and she went downH3381 to the well,H5869 and filledH4390 her pitcher,H3537 and came up.H5927

Exo 2:4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. :5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
...7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother.

To attempt to suggest that alma does not mean virgin denies the other Scriptures where indeed it does mean just that. Including when referring to maid, damsel--which also can mean a virgin. Do the study or simply understand that the prophecies were fulfilled in Christ.

To deny that Mary was a virgin is to deny that the Holy Spirit overshadowed her, and that God was fulfilling prophecies concerning His only "begotten Son".

Psa 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

Act 13:33 God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

1Jn 4:9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

By rejecting Virgin, no longer is Jesus the Son of God, but the son of Joseph. Sign0095

No longer is He God manifest in the flesh, but just a man, an agent of God, a prophet, a messenger.... Sign0138

And those beliefs attempt to overturn the Truth of the Scriptures concerning Him. :shameonyou:

Which many would advocate and applaud that being done. We are warned trhoughout the Scriptures about these things.

And that is excectly the reason why they don t WANT it to mean virgin, it would ruin theyre rejection of the propecy.
