I've been doing some a little study into the Jewish Wedding and have just realised that some of its customs originate in the Mishna and the Talmud. This concerns me as part of the church is using this analogy alot and many are getting interested in HR because of this.

Does the use of a chuppah come from the bible? and if so where is it mentioned?

Thanks

No it is not in the Bible. Is part of Judaism's tradition which as you stated is found in the Talmud/Mishnah.

People get excited when they can grasp hold of something that looks "Biblical" because of the spiritual application that is presented, instead of doing their "homework" to see if it is factual or not
My little sister married a "Sabra" (native Israeli) and they were married under a chuppah. Most "Messianic" marriages are performed under a chuppah. Would you post a link where I can find our more information about the chuppah?

I agree they have not done enough research into this. It fits in with what they want to believe - no questions asked.

I read one piece from a website that said:
Quote:The Torah provides very little guidance with regard to the procedures of a marriage. The method of finding a spouse, the form of the wedding ceremony, and the nature of the marital relationship are all explained in the Talmud.

But why does the church want to apply things to the church when they are oral laws and traditions from 70AD onwards. 12735

Having been a part of that whole stream of thinking, my opinion is that it is feel good information given by people that are trusted as having "greater revelation". Leaders are seen as having superior knowledge and spirituality. Therefore, they have obviously studied and have discovered "ancient", but see as new ideas and concepts that were "missed" up until this point.

The whole idea of Jewishness is intriguing to the church, especially since 1948 when Israel became a state. It began a full tilt run towards anything Jewish as having some kind of elevated knowledge of God that Christians somehow missed out on. Zionism, which is huge in America, is pushing people on the fast track to get the Jewish people back to Israel in order for the Messiah to return and prophecy fulfilled. Messianicism is exploding throughout Christendom, because it has the appearance of enabling the "lost" tribes in fulfilling OT prophecy - which is another facet of Zionism.

The bottom line is that people are seeking out Jewish things because as Christians, they feel they can't be all bad, after all the Jewish people are God's chosen, were given the prophecies of Messiah, and He came through the line of David. They also find traditions that have been previously "hidden" until now, and find them intriguing as having a stamp of approval from God because they are Jewish. This pressure to be like the "Jewish" Jesus is a major teaching and people will accept the traditions of Judaism out of ignorance. They truly believe this is what Jesus practiced in the first century and to be like Him, they can now do the same with all this "new enlightenment".
Just an additional thought to what Sheep said. Many many people are not satisfied in Christ, in their relationship with Him, their day to day living for Him, their knowledge of Scripture and so on, and therefore, these various carrots offer a way to know God or experience Him more or they believe in the way "He" wants or the way it was supposed to be. Many have missed that it has always been about Him and that relationship with Him and studying His Word.
