I would like to give my testimony...

about 6 1/2 years ago, i went to a bible study, after wards they had prayer. I heard some pray in tongues, i thought how cool, I want to do that. I asked about it and was told to pray to God for it. so, I started to pray, 6 weeks later after church I met with a lady from the church at her house. we talk and talked and after wards she asked if I wanted anything? I told her I had been praying for the gift to speak in tongues, so she laid her hands on me and said a prayer,

she said ok talk and wow something unknown started coming out of mouth. I was speaking in tongues. I was wow.....

for a while now the Holy Spirit has been convicting my heart, but I wanted the flesh, the Holy Spirit has been getting louder and louder, til today, this morning the Holy Spirit said today, I pmed Vic from seek God. While i was waiting i did some research and asked myself some hard questions and asked for discernment, read scripture and in this i saw the truth.... I had been deceived by satan.

When I got the pm back form vic, it was a a sigh of relief...

you see my first clue should have been, I wanted this gift cuz it was cool and neat, i didnt want it to Glorify God, I wanted so i would sound neat faint2 my friends was speaking in tongues, so i wanted it too doh I was a babe back then and never tested scripture at all, I just looked at my friends and thought it must be okay...we can not look to man we have to read God's Word

satan is a copy cat, he likes to take God's Word and twist it to suit him. This is how he deceives us, thru twisting the Word of God and we fall for it..

more than ever we have to start listening to the Holy Spirit and reading God's Word, satan is out to destroy us.... eek

Thank you so much for the kind words. It is obvious God had been working on you because I have never had an interaction about tongues be so good in such a short time.

One of the questions I have asked was, what Scripture was it that would have you desire to have what someone else had been given by the Holy Spirit?

The gifts of the Spirit are freely given by Him, as He sees fit, for His purposes and for His glory, and all gifts, except tongues, were given for the edification of the Body of Christ. Tongues was for sharing the gospel to those who spoke other languages.

1Co 14:12 Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Rom 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith

1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

As a former tongue talker, I can relate so totally with you. I prayed, begged, believed, "practiced", and confessed scripture for 3 months before I received tongues. I was ecstatic at the time, but it was contrived

After that moment, I made it a point to chatter in tongues every waking minute for over 7 years

I think most people are convinced it's of God because it appears to be of the Holy Spirit and they are taught this is the reality that one is saved - as if one needs a physical manifestation I was into the most unbelievable doctrines concerning tongues. Wow

I am thrilled that you now know the truth and that God has opened your eyes. As you continue to read and study [and do more research] it will only confirm what a deception today's tongues are.

Vic's articles are fantastic - they helped me beyond anything else and I poured over her stuff for hours trying to make sense of it all. It was very hard to me to give this up. It had been part of my life and I truly believed it was of God. In the end, I let it go totally - how beautiful to know the simplicity of Christ and that when we don't know how to pray, the Holy Spirit of Christ intercedes for us. It's not about us and our babbling, but about Him.

Amen.... it is was hard and i got a little upset with a person a bit back when they was saying that speaking in tongues wasnt for today... but after i got over it, i started to question it, but me silly little flesh wanted to hold on to this kewlness in talking. and thinking it was the Holy Spirit and then... i would have to deal with that i had been deceived by satan just easier to hold on to the flesh, ooopppsss...

and it really wasnt til yesterday morning, when i ran across perverted Christianity 2, from Vic that hit hit me and i listened to Jesus and ran with it..
amen and praise the Lord....in that moment, i felt relieved i knew the truth,but also like an idiot cuz i believed satans lie for so long and sad cuz i couldnt talk this kewl talk anymore and then to tell my children in a way that wouldnt hurt Christ. so far i have told Mindy, but i still have 3 other children to tell....she understood, and she then could see how easy it is for us to fall in satans snare.

so on to my journey i go........

I felt like an idiot too The tough thing for me was to retrain my brain. I had trained myself to talk in tongues the minute I got up in the morning till I went to bed at night and would often go into it during the night as well. So it was really hard not to start blabbing as it became such an ingrained habit

My deepest concern was that I had blasphemed Christ by allowing my words to be controlled by a seducing spirit. I had heard testimonies of those hearing tongue talkers and had recognized their own language and the result was cursing God. Now, whether or not that was a true occurrence, I don't know. After years of reading, reading, reading - I discovered that no tongues of today is of God. So that could have been a set up or just someone telling stories.

From where I stand today, I do not believe we need tongues - we have the written Word of God. Tongues was for a sign to unbelievers. The obvious question then is why are "christians" being sold on the concept of a prayer language? Which, btw, cannot be proven anywhere in the NT - including 1 Cor 14 - the tongues handbook, so to speak

It sounds as if you are doing a good job of telling your children. They are so open and trusting. Better that they know the pitfalls at an early age and when they are grown will not fall into the same deceptions. Being honest with them is the way to go. I am sure as you continue to study and read the Word, it will become clear what other stuff you are hanging onto that might also be false. We are our childrens most effective teacher

I too realized, since i couldnt understand what i was saying i could have been saying all kinds of thing against the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and our Father in heaven, i could have been cursing them or others....wowwww....

all my children are grown youngest is 19, none of them serve the Lord, some are leaning that way, but they say just not ready, i tell them you better get ready and like Now...but i think its important that they know the truth about tongues and other stuff, so they dont fall into the same trap, so they can see how easy it is and also even when we do let ourselves get deceived how soooo important it is to repent and admit it and tell of it as a testimony....no darkness allowed in that area anymore if i kept this a secret satan would use it against me fr one and he would snare them with it. so its very important to bring this to the light and show satan for what he is, a liar....

After examining the whole tongues concept, I have come to believe some of it is just babbling incoherent syllables [not words, not a language], and some of it may be demonic as it has been compared to the identical verbiage of the tongues of satanic worshipers. I have also read, with interest, that it could be a brain training technique as well [when you keep muttering the same phonetic patterns over and over, the brain automatically will shift into gear and you begin to rattle off info that is stored].

I used to listen to myself often intrigued with what I was saying - lots of repetition. And I was never given interpretation, which is strictly against Scripture. What I noticed, that did not click at the time, is that everyone was speaking the same "language" and the prophecies/words of the Lord all sounded identical in tongues, yet with differing interpretations. That does not make sense. As I look back, I see clearly how deceptive all of this was.

I agree that this stuff has to be exposed, and you have a wonderful opportunity to share with your kids. Hopefully, they will seek after the Lord. When one has been subjected to a false movement that promotes tongues, it will adversely affect people spiritually. I have seen many fall away due to the tongues and other teachings in the faith movement because of the false spirit that it was birthed from. I thank God that He pulled me from the whole mess as I was most definitely on a course to ship wreck my faith.

Over 20 years ago a work colleague put severe pressure on me - he kept telling me that that any Christian could pray in tongues as long as they had been baptised in the Holy Spirit. We had started a bible study during our lunch breaks. He convinced me that if I prayed enough I would receive this gift even tho I always disagreed with his belief on when someone receives the "Baptism" of the Holy Spirit (I always believed and still do that at the moment of salvation the Holy Spirit is sealed in us).

I too like sheepwrecked begged the Lord for this gift - and ended up babbling during my prayer time. This lasted for about 3 months - I started to attend their home study group and I was really nervous and felt so uncomfortable especially if anyone started to speak in tongues - I never would other than in private in my own prayer time. But from reading the bible I could see that these people were so extreme in their beliefs that I cut myself off from them and lost a work friendship over this. What they were doing was not matching up to the scripture that I was reading in the bible.

I also watched another work colleague's life become ruined through the fellowship of this home study group later on that year. In the end that person wanted nothing more to do with Christianity no matter how much I or another friend of his spoke to him about the bible - he was so confused and ended up drinking heavily and in military prison.

But over those 20 years now and again I "felt the urge" to pray in tongues but was so unsure if it was right or not that I would not let myself do it. My only doubt was - what if this was really a gift from the Lord and I had rejected it?


Anyway 3 years ago I started reading books by Kurt Koch how was a leading Christian researcher in to the occult many many years ago. He dealt quite abit on the tongues movement and I was shocked to find out that what I had done over 20 years ago was not from the Holy Spirit but from another spirit. I prayed to the Lord and asked him to forgive me for this.

For me once the bible was completed the gift of tongues ceased. The completed bible is what is referred to in scripture as being perfected.

1Cr 13:8 -10 KJV Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away.
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

Your experience sounds similar to mine. The pressure was intense to speak in tongues, and I was told point blank that without tongues I was not saved aka did not have the Holy Spirit. About that time I began to study and read every book Kenneth Hagin wrote on the topic and listened to tapes from Kenneth Copeland. I studied hard and learned all the doctrines associated with tongues, which were quite numerous. All the people that I hung with were blabbers but me, so I continually got the "look" - it was either pity or judgment. Not fun

I agree that tongues ceased in the first century. The study that I have done up to this point shows zero historical documentation of tongues continuing past the first century other than through heretical mystical sources. They did not become popular until the 1800s and took off under Charles Parham in 1908 and spread like wildfire from there into the Auza Street Revival. Parham had severe issues with his theology and his life style. I have often tried to show people that if the tree is evil/corrupted, the fruit is as well. The problem is that tongues appeals to the feely touchy experiential in people and without it, they are convinced they don't have God

I also agree with Koch, that tongues are a very dangerous weapon as tongues becomes the merit badge of spirituality instead of focusing on Christ. You can always tell a false religious movement by keying in on its central theme. If it's not Christ without the "and", it's not of God
