I have been inundated with emails about H1N1. Ideas of all sorts. This particular email is...well...different. So I thought I would share it.
Subject: Onions fight flu virus
My Dad had the swine flu in 1919 and nearly died. Grandma used a drop of Eucalyptus oil on sugar and steamed him. It saved his life while 100's died in Saskatchewan. We were raised on it and never got colds or the flu.
We use it for a week in the fall to get it into our systems.
Forget the spicy candles and herbs to freshen the smell in your house! Try onions!
OK, it is true. After reading this you will think that I have really lost it. However, this is a true story.
In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor who visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.
The Doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the Doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn’t believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.
I heard this story from my hairdresser in AZ. She said that several years ago many of her employees were coming down with the flu and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. (And no, she is not in the onion business.)
The moral of the story is, buy some onions and place them in bowls around your home. If you work at a desk, place one or two in your office or under your desk or even on top somewhere. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.
If this helps you and your loved ones from getting sick, all the better.
If you do get the flu, it just might be a milder case. Whatever, what have you to lose? Just a few bucks on onions!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem. Just a few minor points to ponder. When it was said the onion absorbed the bacteria....the flu is a virus...and this flu isn't any worse than any other. Seasonal flus affect more people than this one. People need to think.
As far as the onion filtering out the flu---unless someone coughed and sneezed directly onto the onion...it's not likely going to be too helpful except to make one also have runny eyes. Flu virus's are spread through coughing and sneezing -infected saliva and mucous -are spewn into the air and infect others directly in contact. Other ways are touching things that have been contaminated by others with their coughing and sneezing and then touch their mouths or mucous membranes. Hence the need to use common sense and good hygene---wash your hands! and avoid touching public things as much as possible, where people normally touch-
-like escalator handrails, public washroom doorhandles, etc.. If you must, wash your hands with soap and water, and avoid touching your face unless you are clean.
Best case scenario for onions all over your house is they will likely keep people out of your home and hence if you stay home ---you won't be exposed to any flu viruses.
As with so many things that get circulated by email, including actual viruses, Snopes has an article dedicated to Onions fighting the flu, which also dispels the notion that doing the above onion ritual can accomplish anything to combat the flu.
