I've been noticing some who are rejecting the authority of the Scriptures and the belief that the Bible is God's inspired and protected Word, and who also reject Christianity, etc, are sourcing Gesenius' Lexicon which was translated by, amongst others, Tregelles, who also wrote his own translation of the Greek New Testament, The Englishman's Greek Concordance, The Englishman's Hebrew and Chaldee Concordance, and the English translation of Gesenius' Hebrew Lexicon, with additions and corrections.

Tregelles warned in Gesenius' Lexicon in his 'To the Student, concerning Gesenius scholarly attacks on Christianity, his rationalism and neology--changing the meanings or making new words and meanings, within his body of work.

Of note with Gesenius is his changinge Isaiah 7:14 to be that 'almah', would not indicate virgin.

Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Samuel Tregelles, well respected for his linguistic abilities was part of the "critical studies" mentality that seemed to permeate the 1800's, "In 1838 Tregelles took up the critical study of the New Testament, and formed a design for a new Greek text. This plan was the result of finding, first, that the textus receptus did not rest on ancient authority; secondly, that existing collations were inconsistent and inaccurate..."Tregelles, Samuel Prideaux (DNB00)http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Tregelles,...ux_(DNB00)

He was on the New Testament revision committee, but was unable to attend its meetings

I believe his works are foundational to new versions, and he worked with Westcott and Hort. " In 1879 Dr. Hort published an appendix to the Greek Testament, containing the materials for the prolegomena that Tregelles's notes supplied, with supplementary corrections by Annesley William Streane."

One can read a bit of the history of the Greek New Testament revision committee etc here, and follow the series links: http://www.seekgod.ca/ghostsociety.htm and also this series: http://www.seekgod.ca/rockefeller.htm and please note the last article in that series: http://www.seekgod.ca/mott.htm

So what's the scoop on Gesenius and his accuracy, and Tregelle's activities, what the revision committee did or did not do in making a new Greek text on which all newer versions of the Bible are based?
