Humm ! more likely prophet must have his highest standard of conduct ( only very few) evangelists and pastors and teachers are more likely to be avaiable to minister the sheep of God now! beacause we do have the written word ( The Scriptures) accordingly 2 Timothy 3:15-17 that Paul urged that The Scriptures must be used to teach every believer as well God Himself use The Scriptures to prepare us for His good works! {Safeguard to have the Scriptures with you all the way} the best way! because of false christs and false prophets to decieve many with lying wonders and signs and false visions and false gospels!

Exactly. It's by the Word that we can discern between good and evil and only by use of the Word can we grow in understanding for these things. We are called to study to show ourselves approved, and many miss that understanding.

Being a prophet means being herald of God's news and some other claims that he can call his own. And though you can probably be wrong with some of your prophecies you can very well be given another chance to redeem yourself. I don't think our God is that type to immediately take you out of the list with one wrong doing and I would imagine him giving a ton other chances to make up for it.

RE: Can someone claim to be a prophet and...
I do not believe that there are prophets any more.Sure someone can call themselves a prophet if they like but they are not the same as the prophets of the bible.
The prophets of the bible were used of God to establish the foundation of the church.Once that foundation was laid there was no more need for prophets or apostles.

Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

1Co 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.
1Co 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

The prophets of old were ordained of God for the laying of the foundation of the church,part of that foundation is the inspired,infallible written word of God.
We have the completed revelation of God in the Bible.God used the prophets to reveal His truth to people before there was a completed bible that everyone had access to.
Now that we have a completed bible and a finished foundation for which the church can build on,we no longer need a prophet.God reveals Himself to us through His Word.
Why would we need prophets today?Are we still laying the foundation for the church today?
The bible says it has been laid.

Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.(2John 1:9)
