Was Jesus upset because the disciples had not called on Him? Is this what Jesus was saying when he told them that the demon could only be expelled with prayer and fasting? Jesus knew their hearts - it seems that the disciples may have been trying to get rid of the demon in their own power and not Jesus' power.

I agree. Because it's about allowing Christ to work through each of us. It almost seems like maybe they got caught up in trying, instead of trusting and believing where the power came from to cast out demons. By telling them it was by fasting and prayer---the focus was to be on seeking God's will and His purposes, with full dependence on Him to do whatever.Which they later learned completely.

Heb 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
Heb 2:4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
