Righteous Gentile ie Ger toshav
The idea of the righteous gentile or ger toshav---one of our newbies has this nic, needs to be discussed.
There's several definitions used and it will be interesting to see which apply. The rightous gentile or ger toshav >a Gentile who accepts the authority of the Torah and the Rabbis upon himself, although he isn't a participant of Judaism per se. >a Gentile who officially accepts the seven Noahide Laws as binding upon himself in the presence of a beth din (Jewish rabbinical court). In the Talmud there are two other slightly different opinions (Avodah Zarah 64b) as to what the ger toshav accepts upon himself: -abstaining from idolatrous practices -upholding the rabbinic count of the 613 commandments except for some food allowances The majority opinion within Judaism is that the ger toshav must accept the seven Noahide Laws before a rabbinical court of three, meaning agreeing to abide authority of rabbinic judaism. By doing so, they obtain certain legal protections and privileges from the Judaic community. Some prefer to view ger toshav as a 'righteous gentile or 'pious among the nations'. The other term for gentile is goy For many within Judaism the idea is to have non-Jews accept and live by the Noachide laws or Seven laws of Noah. Eventually, the person may of their own free will decide to become circumcised and fully convert to Judaism. It's also a personal choice as to whether to simply adhere to the Noachides and not appear before the rabbinical court. If they move forward into conversion to Judaism they become a 'righteous alien' or ger tzedek according to Judaism. Now the question becomes, does someone who believes Christ, believes the New Testament aka New Covenant, believes Jesus fulfilled the law and the prophets and is the promised Messiah, and we are to live to Christ according to the NT beliefs----should they and could they enter into becoming a 'Ger toshav'? Vic SeekGod.ca 3John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. |
