In Jim Jones case, people came to his temple for altruistic reasons aka a better society. In other words, they were searching for something that they perceived to be the highest goal both spiritually and socially. Paul even speaks of deception as itching ears. 2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned to fables. |
