I'll give my take on the above. Jesus is teaching us that to have to swear to show you are telling the truth is not the ideal state of affairs.It may have been acceptable while under the Mosaic law, in the same way as divorce was, although Jesus says that in the beginning it was not so. In the New Covenant we are called to a higher standard, where a man's word can be trusted without him having to resort to swearing. Like he said; Mat 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these comes from evil. |
