RE: Did Peter's Vision of the Sheet Mean People & Food?
The issue is very clear, although it is becoming very muddied by agenda driven posts.
Paul, a Jew, rebuked Peter, a Jew, for being a hypocrite for living like the Gentiles and "not as do the Jews". Before Christ died, all The Jews lived according to the law of Moses which included CLEAN and UNCLEAN FOOD and separation from non Jews. The Gentiles did not live according to clean and unclean food--amongst many other things that THE JEWS were required to do according to the Law of Moses--and the Gentiles were not part of. PETER was ***living*** "after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews," AND, "he did eat with the Gentiles:". after the manner of Gentiles,G1483 G1483 ἐθνικῶς ethnikōs Thayer Definition: 1) like the Gentiles Part of Speech: adverb A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G1482 >>> G1482 ἐθνικός ethnikos Thayer Definition: 1) adapted to the genius or customs of a people, peculiar to a people, national 2) suited to the manners or language of foreigners, strange, foreign 3) in the NT savouring of the nature of pagans, alien to the worship of the true God, heathenish 3a) of the pagan, the Gentile Part of Speech: noun masculine not >as do the Jews,G2452 G2452 Ἰουδαΐκώς Ioudaikōs Thayer Definition: 1) Jewishly, after the manner of the Jews Part of Speech: adverb A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G2451 why >>>compellest G315 ἀναγκάζω anagkazō Thayer Definition: 1) to necessitate, compel, drive to, constrain 1a) by force, threats, etc. 1b) by permission, entreaties, etc. 1c) by other means Part of Speech: verb Gentiles> to live as do the Jews?G2450 G2450 Ἰουδαΐ́ζω Ioudaizō Thayer Definition: 1) to adopt Jewish customs and rites, imitate the Jews, Judaise 1a) one who observes the ritual law of the Jews Part of Speech: verb A Related Word by Thayer’s/Strong’s Number: from G2453 Gal 2:11 But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. Gal 2:12 For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. Gal 2:13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him; insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation. Gal 2:14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a Jew,************* livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews,************** why compellest thou the Gentiles************* to live as do the Jews?********** After Christ died, things changed and the need to understand that there was no longer the separation of clean and unclean, nor any/all the things that had separated Jews from Gentiles. ALL are saved by grace through faith. The point also that was made that "the apostles and elders, with the whole church, chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren" also, just as the Gentiles did not need to live as the Jews, the Jews were no longer bound to the law of Moses because they understood what Christ did when He died on the cross and brought in the NEW Covenant. Many Gentiles served Christ and worked with Paul and others and they neither were circumcised nor were they compelled to keep the law of Moses. In fact since the doctrine that the apostles laid for the church was written into letters and epistles which became the NT, we do not see the doctrine of the Law of Moses reiterated. Rather we see the doctrine of Christ as was taught to the apostles which they then conveyed, sound doctrine which allows us to know and serve Christ, without being under the law of Moses. Jud 1:16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. Jud 1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; Jud 1:18 How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. Jud 1:19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. Jud 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Jud 1:21 Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Eph 2:16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: Eph 2:17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. Eph 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. 1Co 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Vic SeekGod.ca 3John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. |
