I know I got off on the topic about Max Lucado. One last question though; If Jesus WAS God, how could he commit his spirit to Him? I know I'm going to go "Duh!" when I get the answer because I should know it already. Anyway, maybe you can explain it is terms I can understand.
Thanks!

I think Vic's post on this thread might help you understand a bit more:

Yeah, that's a good thread over there, Sheep.

Very good question, Mark.

One thing we know from Scripture is that Jesus demonstrated complete dependence on His Father, yet they were One. Jesus was not schizophrenic. He was not talking to Himself, but actually talking to His Father in Heaven. The scriptures are very clear in many places that there are 3 distinct persons in the Godhead and they are all dependent on each other and exhibit perfect unity.

Mat 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

If Jesus was talking to Himself, then who sent Him?

And we have this:

Act 3:26 Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.

Gal 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,

Does not say that God sent Himself, but that He sent His Son.

So, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are 3 distinct persons of the Godhead and they are completely interdependent on one another.

Here, all 3 persons of the Godhead are mentioned.
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Here Jesus is saying that His Father is greater than He. How can you be greater than yourself?

Joh 14:28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

You see, Jesus was submitted to His Father, not the other way around. Jesus trusted in Him in all ways even on the cross, when He said, "Into your hands to I commend my Spirit".

The 2nd person of the Godhead became extremely vulnerable in taking on human flesh, and the form of a Servant. God the Father also made Himself very vulnerable in send His Son. They would both have to trust each other, completely. Jesus would have to totally submit to His Father in loving trust and obedience. What Adam should have done and what we are supposed to do.

Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:

The Scriptures cannot be more plain spoken than this:

1Jn 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

Do I understand it all? Not really. But we have these promises.
1Jn 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1Co 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Do I believe in the 3 persons of the Godhead, of course. They are in the Scriptures in an undeniable way.

Here, all 3 are IN ACTION.
Mat 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
Mat 3:17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

This is why it is not hard to believe that Jesus was giving up His Spirit to His Father. He knew where He was going back to. He knew that His Father did not forsake Him.

Luk 23:46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Jer 12:5 If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and if in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan?

Sounds like an over reaction here. I take the despair of the son and his abandonment to be real. But did he cease to be God? If he did he did not save even himself, let alone anyone else.

The thinking behind this kind of stuff is to me voyeurism. It is not for nothing that darkness came over the earth for three hours. the issue was between Christ and the Father.

There is also a morbidity about it, too many preachers get into trouble needing to figure out the details here, and they turn calvary to a crucifix. it is not for nothing that we protestants are a catholic offshoot, many catholic preoccupatinos surface in protestant thought, as I think i see in Lucado here.

I had not heard if him. Clearly I am missing nothing.

BUT even if he were a man of God, does it matter that I know it? Surely not, as we can all get our wisdom from God direct. anything less undercuts the sole mediatorship of the Son
AS for Mel Gibson's Passion movie, I regard it as a snuff porn flick. Seriously. And i refuse to see it. I did some research. The violence is greater than real, as Gibson is fond of that kind of thing.

I have not seen a Mel Gibson movie since he gangraped english history in Braveheart. (I did some research on the gross errors in that peice of garbage at the time, so bad that I hold it against Gibson)

I think that might cover my thoughts on Max Lucado Reaction

Jesus Christ is not an EXPRESSION of God. HE IS GOD in the FLESH.

I submit if the Trinity were ever "dismantled", then the Universe would implode.

Am I being unreasonable to want to see Scripture from Lucado on the following:

1. The two who have been one are now two.

2. Jesus is now alone.

3. The Christ, who was an expression of God

4. The Christ,,,,, is abandoned.

5. The Trinity is dismantled.

6. The Godhead is disjointed.

7. The unity is dissolved

Where did he even get this stuff (feelings?). Makes for good novels, I guess.Icon_runforhills

RE: Max Lucado
I think that most Christians have their receptors turned off ...... aka zero discernment. Look at his bio as featured in Wikipedia:

Quote:Max Lucado (born 1955) is a best-selling Christian author and minister of writing and preaching at Oak Hills Church (formerly the Oak Hills Church of Christ) in San Antonio, Texas. Lucado has written more than 50 books with 28 million copies in print, including three recipients of the Charles "Kip" Jordon Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year (Just Like Jesus, In the Grip of Grace, and When God Whispers Your Name)[1], and has appeared regularly on several bestseller lists.[2] After serving as the pulpit minister for 20 years, Lucado announced in early 2007 that he was stepping down due to health concerns related to atrial fibrillation.[3] Lucado has since assumed the ministry role of writing and preaching at Oak Hills. He co-pastors the church with one of Willow Creek's former teaching pastors, Randy Frazee.

Lucado was named "America's Pastor" by Christianity Today magazine and in 2005 was named by Reader's Digest as "The Best Preacher in America."[4] He has been featured on The Fox News Channel, NBC Nightly News, Larry King Live, and USA Today. His books are regularly on the New York Times Best Seller List. He has been featured speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast.

The thing that jumps off the page is his affiliation with Willow Creek, which is an offshoot of Rick Warren's Saddleback Church Reaction [not to mention other spurious organizations. This guy is a mess. Seriously. 12735]

When that many christians of all denominations are buying Lucado's books in those numbers, it's not a good thing. It reeks of mass indoctrination which feels good to the flesh and absolutely is not of God.
No

Who would have thought that Paul's words would take on such enormous proportions:

2 Cor 11:13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.
2Co 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
2Co 11:15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

Actually the thing that jumps off the page at me, is the secular media promoting him. His stuff is found in all manner of secular stores, cardshops etc. And the Scriptures say this about that: Eyerub

Luk 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. 15249

RE: Max Lucado
There is a simple response to these preachers, says I with a grin and a dose of irony.

Smile

REJECT THEM ALL.

If they are big enough to have a following then you can bet they are ear ticklers, and if they are not big enoigh to have a following you can bet they wish they were.

I am not throwing out the baby with the bathwater, if I come across a doctrine from any of these I will give it a fair hearing and judgew it according to scripture. rejecting anything because of its origin is a fallacy.

But why bother dive into a sewer to look for a gold coin?

If I am ever called to refute these people, maybe, some time, but not now. I am not called to waste my time NOW in examining nonsense to refute it

RE: Max Lucado
Strefanash not having heard of Lucado is surprising both due to the heavy marketing and the proliferation of his materials. I was introduced to him through gifts by dear folks who know I love to read. I did try to read a couple of his books. One almost 20 years ago and another about 6 years ago. Didn't care for his overly descriptive style which I thought sometimes made his points obtuse. Or, as in this thread, left me wondering whether he was using artistic license or something worse. Hi Rick!

We discussed the Manhattan Dec in this thread:

http://www.seekgod.ca/forum/showthread.p...an#pid5053

Richard Bennett had a very interesting view, however. We could discuss it there if you want to pull out some quotes from His article Smiley-face-thumb
