Actually the Geneva was translated and composed by exiled reformers between 1557-1560.

According to a baptist website that presents the London Baptist confession which Scotchman also adheres to, along with claiming Puritan, baptist and that confession along with calvinist beliefs:

In other words, people understood the Bible through the lens of those men's beliefs, interpretations and opinions of the Scriptures. Instead of merely reading the Scriptures. They merely moved from having the Catholic clergy controlling the interpretation of the Scriptures to these 'puritan' 'baptist' and calvinist beliefs.

According to the Geneva bible website: "The completed Geneva Bible was published in 1560 and dedicated to Queen Elizabeth, who had succeeded her half sister, “Bloody Mary”, to the throne and, at least for political reasons, supported the break with the Church of Rome. "

A 1579 Scottish edition of the Geneva version was the first Bible printed in Scotland and soon became the standard of the Scottish Kirk. The Scottish Parliament passed an act soon after the publication of the Geneva Bible in Scotland making it mandatory for every householder worth 300 marks and every yeoman and burgess worth 500 pounds to have a Bible in the “vulgar tongue” in their homes, under a penalty of 10 pounds.

In other words, the people were reading the Geneva Bible from fleshly understanding, and were dependent on the added notes, instead of understanding the following Scriptures---and the leadership appeared to think this was right...and many still do today. They were as dependent on those notes which were added to the Word of God, as they were previously to the catholic clergy, instead of depending on God to give understanding.
