Not New Age but Denfintely Cultic
I have, since my conversion, regarded monasticism as evil. But in my baptist church, a self consciously missionary church, their idolatry (IMO) of this led them to call the medieval monasteries "witnessing communities".
Take a look at this, the rule of St Benedict who founded the Benedictine Order in about 500 AD. He did not found monasticism but he did set the form of medieval monasticism which was to follow for more than a thousand years. IMO this stuff is horrifying, dead works of flesh, total self repression, bondage, slavery that ruined the lives of countless monks and nuns deceived by the false hope that heaven woud be the reward for a whole life spent in this pursuit. In my heart I picked up medieval catholicism and monasticism from films and tv I saw as a child, even from the movie version of The Sound of Music which came out in 1965 when I was 7. And I have been a monk shivering in my cell for 30 years, not under an abbot but definitely under a rule. Oh baleful effect http://www.kansasmonks.org/RuleOfStBenedict.html |

RE: Not New Age but Denfintely Cultic
People who practice monasticism take vows about sex and marriage which shouldn't be taken as I've said before about oaths, and more importantly what God said. "Swear not at all." Also, when the monks and nuns are in isolation like that, they can easily be brainwashed. It's best not to concern ourselves with different movements and divisions in the church, such as Lutheranism, Calvinism, Presbyterianism, Baptist, etc. because these completely go against the way true churches are organized.
In the first century churches were called "the church at Laodicea" or "the church of Ephesus". Of course, now we're in an awful apostasy. Most church members go a whoring after the false gods of money and pleasure. There are no pastors in this world that speak the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Lies are believed by itching ears and the Truth is denied by mankind as always. Acts 9:5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: IT IS HARD FOR THEE TO KICK AGAINST THE PRICKS. Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. |

RE: Not New Age but Denfintely Cultic
I'm sorry DarkGlass1312 but I have to disagree. I find no instance in the scriptures where the almighty says "Swear not at all." As we see here in Jeremiah which appears to be talking to Gentiles.
Jer 12:16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to swear by Baal; then shall they be built in the midst of my people. Also we see: Deu 6:13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Deu 10:20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name. Lev 19:12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I [am] the LORD. So it appears we are involved in a conundrum. In Matthew it appears that we are not to swear at all, however as you can see referenced by the above passages we are told to swear by his name, however not falsely. |

I know that the rule of benedic is long, 72 chapters.
but chapter 4 is a list of 40 commandments, each being one liners. reading those will i think summarize the evil of the man's thought without the need to weigh through the whole mass |

There is no conundrum ![]() Jesus said not to swear at all ........... so He changed the Law, again Mat 5:33 Again, you have heard that it has been said by them of old time, You shall not forswear yourself, but shall perform to the Lord your oaths: Mat 5:34 But I say to you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Mat 5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Mat 5:36 Neither shall you swear by your head, because you can not make one hair white or black. Mat 5:37 But let your communication be, Yes, yes; No, no: for whatever is more than these comes of evil. |
