Eze 16:53-55 has been used repeatedly as proof text for universal reconciliation and postmortem redemption. It is believed that God said he will restore Sodom.
This is Eze 16:53-55 out of context. Eze 16:53 When I shall bring again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, then will I bring again the captivity of thy captives in the midst of them: 54 That thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be confounded in all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them. 55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate. Here is Eze 16:53-55 in context. Chapter 16 of Ezekiel is not about the restoration of Sodom but about the sins of Jerusalem, Eze 16:2 says, "Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations", Sodom is used many times as a negative example of comparison and also used to warn against sin and God's wrath. The comparison of sins to Sodom's continues in the New Testament.( I think this also shows how longsuffering God is with us and how people are given many warnings and chances to repent.) 2Pe 2:6 And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; Mat 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, ,shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee. Luke 17:28 Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; 29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and ,destroyed them all. 30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Mat 10:14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet. 15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha ,in the day of judgment, than for that city. 16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. Rev 11:7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified. 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. Jude 1:5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, ,he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, ,are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. I believe this type of comparison is what is happening in Ezekiel, Jerusalem's sins are being compared to Sodom’s. Eze 16:44 Behold, every one that useth proverbs shall use this proverb against thee, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. Ezekiel 16 in context is talking about Jerusalem's sins as being worse than those of Sodom; it is not talking about universal reconciliation or postmortem redemption. Sodom was never brought back, nor ever returned to its former estate; therefore Jerusalem should not expect it either. How would it have even been possible for them, Sodom and Jerusalem to return back to their respective states or conditions before becoming sinful and idolatrous? It would seem a hopeless statement but later God mentions a new covenant! Jerusalem will be "in the midst of" her two less-guilty sisters and be ashamed at the day of judgement. All of Samaria and Jerusalem who were involved in abominable worship, as well as the rebellious of Israel in the time of Jesus, will according to Jesus, have a less tolerable time "in the day of judgment" than will the people of Sodom.(Matt. 11:20-24) Ezekiel goes into great detail to show how Israel (Jerusalem) was unfaithful to her “husband” and why she deserved punishment. Ezekiel is prophecy concerning Jerusalem it has nothing to do with the so called restoration of Sodom, or postmortem redemption, we should not try to project that into prophecy text concerning Jerusalem, especially when Sodom is only being mentioned as a negative comparison of the severity of their sins and how they should be ashamed because their sins surpassed those of Sodom's, whom they themselves passed judgement on and condemned. The use of Sodom has been consistent throughout the Bible, it was always used as a warning to repent or face eternal judgment and wrath of God.

Colossians 1:15-20 has been used in support of postmortem redemption or has been said to imply universal salvation, so I wanted to post that for a closer look, as well as Romans 11:36.

Col 1:2 clearly states that Paul is addressing the saints in Christ at Colosse, who are alive in this world, not anyone dead, burning in hell in the afterlife and not unrepentant, unbelievers but "faithful brethren in Christ". This was not written to unrepentant people but to believers in Christ, so to say it refers to redemption being offered to those in hell would be a major stretch to say the least. Reconciliation is what God did when He removed all of the barriers that stood between man and Himself so that everyone has the opportunity to come to Him for salvation. He accomplished this by the death of His Son Jesus on the cross for the offenses of mankind. Even though reconciliation took place at the cross mankind was and still is missing a crucial element –spiritual life. That life was lost in the garden --Adam was told that if he ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he would surely die. And we inherited that spiritual death. Rom 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:2 refers to man being under "the law of sin and death." That law –whether written on stone (as was the case for the Israelites---the law/ordinances were nailed to the cross) or written on our conscience (as is the case for the entire world ---if and when the Holy Spirit convicts each person) – was intended to show us our condition. It points out our sinful behavior which is symptomatic of being spiritually dead –desperately in need of new life. The law cannot restore life –it can only make our condition of spiritual death obvious. No human being since Adam has been born with that spiritual life. That's why Jesus told Nicodemus that he needed to be “born again”. Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. Salvation, according to the Bible, is obtained by hearing the gospel and placing faith in Jesus Christ, while damnation is rejecting the gospel message of salvation through Jesus Christ. Those that accept Jesus as their Savoir take Him as their mediator. 1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. Mediator G3316 mesite¯s mes-ee'-tace From G3319; a go between, that is, (simply) an internunciator, or (by implication) a reconciler (intercessor): - mediator. Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. The purpose of the mediator is to bring reconciliation. He reconciles opposing parties. We have 2 kinds of reconciliation happening in the Bible that we need to keep in mind, Jesus has reconciled both Jew and Gentile with each other and has also reconciled all men unto God..all men meaning all types of men from any nationality. He would no more be just the God of Israel but He would also be the God of people of every nationality (all men) not just the Jews. We can't forget when we read that it was unlawful, forbidden for Jews to keep company with Gentiles but we were reconciled to each other through Christ Jesus. The enmity between the Jew and the Gentile was also abolished at the cross, now the two are to be reconciled together in Christ; there is to be peace and unity because we have become one in the body of Christ for all those who believe Jesus. There is no more distinction between the Jew or Gentile before God. All must come to Jesus Christ through the same gospel, same faith, same belief in Jesus Christ, while on this earth and through that free gift of salvation, those who do believe are part of His Body, the church. Unbelievers are not part of the body of Christ, nor do they have the Holy Spirit because they have not obeyed God in believing Christ. I believe taking the consequences of sin out of the gospel message will lead to false conversion, a person has to experience true conviction of their guilt and realize their need for a Savior, without that how can there be true repentance. Removing hell from Bibles and telling an unbeliever that they too will be saved because God loves them and there is no eternal damnation, will not bring true conviction to a heart laden with sin. Removing the God given eternal consequences of an unrepentant heart, removes the reason Jesus died for all mankind and the need of salvation through Him. That is a false gospel, a false sense of security, only a person who is truly convicted of sin will realize his need for Christ. Nowhere in the New Testament, do we see the apostles telling the unbelievers God loves you. Instead, we see just the opposite. We are not in the business of making people feel more comfortable in their sin. We are to tell them the truth of why Christ died for us, and what happens if we reject Him and by that, as the Spirit works on them, making them feel pricked in their hearts in such a way that they seek the Lord, believe Christ and repent, while they are given opportunity. Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. 40 And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation. 41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls. 42 And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers. We also should note that the Holy Spirit is given to those "whom obey Him". Act 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. Unbelievers need to be convinced of their need of Christ, and need to be convinced of their sins against God, their guilt and the wrath of God that is going to come upon all who are disobedient..without that there is no true conversion . Now on to Romans. This is Romans 11:36 out of context. Romans 11:36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. This is Romans Chapter 11 in context. Rom 11:1 I say then, Hath God cast away his people? God forbid. For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. Wot ye not what the scripture saith of Elias? how he maketh intercession to God against Israel, saying, 3 Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. 4 But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. 5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace. 6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. 7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded 8 (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day. 9 And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them: 10 Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway. 11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. 12 Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; how much more their fulness? 13 For I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: 14 If by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. 15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? 16 For if the firstfruit be holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root be holy, so are the branches. 17 And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; 18 Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. 19 Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in. 20 Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear: 21 For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. 22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 23 And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again. 24 For if thou wert cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree? 25 For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. 26 And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob: 27 For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins. 28 As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. 29 For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. 30 For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: 31 Even so have these also now not believed, that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy. 32 For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all. 33 O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out! 34 For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor? 35 Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? 36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen. This chapter of Romans is warning us (Gentile believers) to live for Christ and tells us (believers) to continue to walk in faith in our daily lives and keep from sin or we too can be cut off, just as Israel was, in part, cut off. Many also believed Christ, as the Scriptures record, but many were blinded so that we believers would share the Truth of Jesus Christ not only with other Gentiles, but with Jews also, as God leads us, so they could be grafted in as God has purposed from Christ dying for us, forward. There is nothing about postmortem redemption. It's about sharing the gospel with all people, Jew or Gentile. All must come to a saving faith in Christ, before they die, or face the wrath and eternal consequences as stated by God.
