Hashivenu and FULLER

Keeping in mind that we have no control over who links to us—we do have control over whom we endorse and support. The IAMC website had a Link (Feb/2000) to the Hashivenu web site, before their recent updates.

Their Purpose 1: "To work together with Messianic congregations and Messianic pastors to encourage G-d's great ENDTIME JEWISH REVIVAL..."

Their Purpose 2 also included the goals of: "To assist in the formation and establishment of NEW Messianic synagogues as the L-rd enables us;  To encourage and support Messianic pastors and rabbis through regular LEADERSHIP CONFERENCES and TRAINING SEMINARS; To promote the return of Messianic DAVIDIC PRAISE AND WORSHIP within Messianic congregations; To provide materials and EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES for Messianic congregations and their leaders."  These goals echo the goals of the Messianic Jewish Theological Institute discussed below.

Hashivenu in turn lists their Favourite Links as being: Messianic Jewish Communications 3(also found on MJAA); Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations (UMJC), Messianic Jewish Alliance of America (MJAA), and Boundaries Magazine.

Stuart Dauermann is president of Hashivenu and a former 'Jews For Jesus' (JFJ) staffer and one of the original members of 'The Liberated Wailing Wall' musical groups for JFJ.  The Steering Committee for the 'Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations' (UMJC) also lists him BUT his e-mail address is at Fuller Seminary.

Under Hashivenu core principals we read: “Messianic Judaism is a Judaism, and not a cosmetically altered "Jewish-style" version of what is extant in the wider Christian community.”5  Hashivenu supports several projects including:

“…Forums”  “Periodic gathering of Messianic leaders helping each other identify and implement the implications of the Hashivenu Mission Statement and Core Principles.

           “Boundaries-“ a magazine…”

“…Messianic T.O.R.A.H. Institute: “Teaching Our Rituals And Heritage through providing training, education, assistance and mentoring to local congregations seeking a mature Messianic Judaism.”

“ Messianic Jewish Theological Institute: “ …academic program offering a full curriculum of courses for training knowledgeable and intellectually astute Messianic congregational professional leaders.”6

Boundaries,  “A New Perspective on a Changing Jewish World” begs the question, “But will your children be Jewish? “ and writes, “…Boundaries is the first publication by messianic Jews to confront the issues that affect each of our lives and the larger community. Enter the arenas of public policy, arts, medicine, ethics, theology and science – and enter with those who share your commitment to messianic faith and Jewish continuity.” 7  The Publisher of Boundaries is Paul A Saal. Boundaries magazine endorses the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations; Messianic Jewish Alliance of America; Hashivenu; Christianity Today and Commentary Magazine.

Although their information has changed, on February 24, 2000- the website read as follows

Hashivenu’s “Messianic Jewish Theological Institute” (MJTI) is to be based and in partnership with Fuller Theological Seminary, where they will be “Training Mature Leaders, Fostering a Mature Messianic Judaism.”

“[In]…the Fall of the year 2000, at the beginning of the new millenium, Messianic Jewish Theological Institute (MJTI) will open its doors for the first time. MJTI is a new training center for leaders in the Messianic Jewish movement. Based in Pasadena, California, and in partnership with Fuller Theological Seminary, MJTI will provide a graduate-level education equipping congregational and movement leaders to serve the Jewish people with integrity and mature wisdom…a growing need for leaders who are committed wholeheartedly to Messiah Yeshua, knowledgeable in Scripture, Jewish tradition, and contemporary thought, and skillful in teaching and caring for others. Such leaders also must be able to unite these elements in an integrated life of Torah (Study), Avodah (Worship), and Gemilut Chasadim (Deeds of Lovingkindness). Messianic Jewish Theological Institute seeks to meet this need by educating future leaders to guide Messianic Judaism towards maturity.” 8.

MJTI listed it’s Favorite Links in February/2000 as including the same as we see throughout this article.  It is well known that Fuller Theological Seminary is one of the leaders in the global ecumenical/Christian movement known as the World Christian Movement.  Fuller runs three other schools from its campus besides the new MJTI, those being the School of World Missions, the School of Theology and the School of Psychology.  Jews for Jesus

Stephen Katz of Jews for Jesus 8a was also a speaker at the Messiah’99 conference. William Greene presents the origin of Jews for Jesus as being part of the 60’s Jesus people. Martin Meyer “Moishe” Rosen, an ordained Baptist minister, founder and recently retired CEO of Jews For Jesus continues to write for the organization, and has reportedly been working a little with Zola Levitt also promoted by MJAA.

“…Jews for Jesus (JFJ). Founded in California by Moishe Rosen, the name… originated with a San Francisco Hillel rabbi who used the term in a campus newspaper article to describe the Jewish Jesus People … His group had started as a mission of the North Carolina-based American Board of Missions to the Jews (ABMJ), who sent Rosen (an ordained Baptist minister) to California in the early 1970s.

“…He was so successful that they brought him back to New York to train other Jewish evangelists, but eventually he returned to San Francisco, populating JFJ mostly with born-again hippies (Jewish and Gentile). In August 1973, the ABMJ terminated Rosen’s position as he became less denomination-oriented and more Jewish-oriented (messianic); the other eleven members of the mission also resigned from the Board in order to stay with JFJ. …since ABMJ funds had been cut off…support came mostly from churches, so JFJ toned down their youth culture image, presented more and more of a Jewish image, and developed a Hebrew Christian ethnic identity. Today, JFJ is supported by churches, a number of Bible schools, and individual Christian donations (they take money only from those who agree with their beliefs; other donations are returned…” 9

Jews For Jesus is obviously highly thought of by MJAA as they are promoted on their Links page  10– as well as found on the IMJA 11 Links.  JFJ is strongly linked 12 with ecumenical groups such as the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism (LCJE). 13 Tuvya Zaretsky is chairman of the LCJE and was in The Liberated Wailing Wall, a musical team for Jews For Jesus. Mr. Zaretsky was with Moishe Rosen when Jews For Jesus was originally incorporated as Hineni Ministries. They were the Los Angeles Branch of the American Board of Missions to the Jews. The ABMJ became Chosen People Ministries a few years ago.
