Every Imagination of the Heart

Genesis 6:5

"And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."

There are those who believe that unbridled imagination, fables, fantasy and fairy tales are simply a good exercise for the imagination of children and adults alike. Everything is supposed to become acceptable in an imaginary world, despite the varied ideas being contrary to Biblical truth. However, God views imagination, that is, the purpose, fabrications, ideas and thoughts that come out of a person, to be rooted in their spiritual beliefs.  Imagination, which are the deep thoughts of a person, reveals what is inside of them.

Mark 7:20-23  20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

According to the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 24:38, "For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

Those who view these times as equal to just prior to flood would recognize that God viewed the creation of mankind with regret. The reason was made clear in the above quoted verse from Genesis 6:5. Many may not understand the implications of the verse as it relates to mankind's sinful state. However, it does very much apply

Breaking down the Genesis 6:5 verse gives insight into the intended meaning.

5 And GOD saw  that the wickedness of man  was great in the earth, and that every imagination  of the thoughts  of his heart  was only evil  continually.

Evaluation of the words from the Hebrew in Strong's Concordance reveals the following terms applied:

that every imagination---purpose, thing framed, imagination, mind, work, to mould into a form; to determine ....

every...: or, the whole imagination: the Hebrew word signifieth not only the imagination, but also the purposes and desires.

of the thoughts--a contrivance, intention, plan (whether bad, a plot; or good, advice):--cunning (work), curious work, device(-sed), imagination, invented, means, purpose, thought.... to weave or to fabricate; to plot or contrive (usually in a malicious sense); hence (from the mental effort) to think, regard, value,... conceive, ... devise, imagine, invent, be like, mean, purpose, reckon(-ing be made), regard, think.

of his heart--the heart (as the most interior organ); bethink themselves, ... mind, X unawares, understanding.

was only evil---bad or (as noun) evil (natural or moral):, harm,... hurt(-ful),... mischief(-vous), misery, naught(-ty),... trouble, vex, wicked(-ly, -ness, one), ... wretchedness, wrong. ...7489. ... to spoil ... figuratively, to make (or be) good for nothing, i.e. bad (physically, socially or morally):... evil (doer, entreat, man)... do harm, (do) hurt,... do mischief, ... wicked (doer, -ly)..."

continually: (everyday) Heb. 3117...

We can see that Imagination is not just fun or harmless. It is what a person is about. Imagination is defined in the dictionary as, "the power of forming in the mind pictures of things not present to the senses. 2 the ability to create new things or ideas or to combine old ones in new forms. 3 a creation of the mind; fancy."  Imagination emphasizes power to create new pictures and ideas by giving new meaning to things seen or known before or by creating things that never existed and making them seem real. ...

What we think about, through our imagination or thoughts, what we focus on, what we enjoy and call good is who we are. If we focus on and enjoy evil and sin and the things of the occult, our hearts are focused on and accepting evil. We are reminded that our hearts are wicked.

Jeremiah 17:9 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? 10 I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

As discussed in our article Have Nothing to Do With Fables or Old Wives Tales, we are told to have nothing to do with fables, that is, "2. an untrue story; falsehood 3. A legend, Myth."

The Greek word for 'fables' is found in Strong's Concordance as 3454. muthos, "perhaps from the same as 3453 (through the idea of tuition); a tale, i.e. fiction ("myth"):--fable

Paul warned in 1 Timothy 1:4 "Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do."

We have clear Biblical instruction to not be involved with fables, myths, fiction and so on. It does not say we can read fables and be edified. It does not say we can read or write fables and learn sound doctrine from them or use them as an evangelism tool. It says to have nothing to do with fables.

This cannot be confused with Christ teaching in parables, which some have tried to say is the same thing. If it was the same thing, we would not have been given these very serious warnings and commands to have nothing to do with fables. A Parable, which Jesus used frequently, is a short story of everyday life used to teach a moral by comparison or by implication. According to Strong's Concordance, it is "an earthly story with a heavenly meaning." Jesus taught the truth with situations that could easily be applied in our own lives. He did not immerse those stories in witchcraft and false gods, nor did he purvey lies of the occult. Those who propagate the idea that a fable is the same as Christ's parables are misinformed and Biblically inaccurate.

1 Timothy 4:6-7 "If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness."

We are reminded that there are seven things that are an abomination to the Lord.

Proverbs 6:16-18 16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

Christians are to abhor evil. Romans 12:9 "Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. "

There are those that would suggest that the imagination of a child or youth to be innocent or good as compared to that of an adult. However, again, God does not say that. Quite the contrary.

Genesis 8:21  'And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done."

Ecclesiastes 11:9,10   "Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.
10 Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity."

vanity--1892... from 1891; emptiness or vanity; figuratively, something transitory and unsatisfactory; ... altogether, vain, vanity. 1891...  a primitive root; to be vain in act, word, or expectation; specifically to lead astray:--be (become, make) vain.

Children are not given license by God to ignore Biblical principals, nor are they given license to do what they want. On the contrary, warning is given that applies to adults and children alike.

Isaiah 30:1   "Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:'

2 Corinthians 7:1  "Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

2 Tim 2:22 "Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."

Parents are commanded to train a child in the ways of the Lord. Proverbs 22:6 "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.'

Proverbs 29:15  "The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. "

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up." .

Ephesians 6:4 "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

Those who would lead children away from Christ will deal with God's wrath.

Matthew 18:5 "And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."

That is why it is of particular concern that Christian parents and Christian leaders have joined the ranks of non-Christians in spreading the misinformation that what the world considers good is also good for their own children and indeed, themselves.

When something is presented as good that is: 1)evil or about the occult in a positive way 2) provides beliefs contrary to God's Word 3) presented by someone who rejects Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior---we cannot embrace it as a source of doctrine or belief.

Job 14:4  "Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one."

We who love the Lord Jesus Christ do not have the same mind or views as those who are of the world. We cannot have, as it goes entirely against the Scriptures.

Ephesians 5:6 "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord."

The spirit of this world is for those who do not have Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned."

Ephesians 2:2 "Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

It stands to reason that if something is promoted as good for Christians, it should be able to stand the test of Scripture. We have been warned that many will turn to fables, at the expense of following the truth.

2 Timothy 4:4 "And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

One merely has to read the titles of various books, movies and cartoons to recognize the  promotion and the acceptance of witchcraft and all manner of the occult. Promotion of and acceptance of things contrary to God is not new. It has always been. Witchcraft and open occultism has been vindicated in many people's mind by having it declared a religion. It always was a religion that was contrary to God and Biblical truth and began in the Garden of Eden. The promotion of the occult and evil to children and adults is at what appears to be an all time high. Except, Biblical history, with Noah and the flood and Sodom and Gomorrah, Babel, remind us that it has been this way before.

Harry Potter--Just Imagination?

Psalm 10:3

"For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth. 4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts."

Today there is much focus on such children's books as the Harry Potter series, written by J.K. Rowling. Although a read of the series reveals witchcraft, occult material and imagery found throughout other books, cartoons, movies, games and so on, Rowling was named by Forbes Magazine as "one of the top twenty-five most powerful celebrities in the world." 2001 sales for the four book series were more than 10 million copies in over a hundred languages, distributed worldwide.

Consider why someone writing fiction could be viewed as one of the most powerful celebrities. Power indicates influence and influence indicates controlling the direction of society and in this case--children. There are those who suggest the Potter books are wonderful, and in fact review after review proclaims them thus. Phrases like:

"...the soul mate of millions of children around the world," USA Today declared in a July 7 front-page story.

HP & the Chamber of Secrets--back cover "A richly imagined world to which young readers will surrender themselves..." Susan Perren, Globe and Mail.

"...parents report a frequent refrain of "they're just like us"--Macleans

HP & The Goblet of Fire back cover--"Like Gameboys, Teletubbies, and films by George Lucas, Harry Potter has permeated the national child consciousness." The Independent on Sunday

"...a series of stories adored by children and parents alike" The Daily Telegraph

An 11 year old wrote, "You have to just unlock the keys and the story goes straight into your head. It is very funny." Having read the four books of the series, and having never been accused of lacking a sense of humor, I found little that was amusing. On the contrary, there was much gruesome, macabre, and wicked material. The occasional witchcraft incident presented in a way to elicit laughs was merely window dressing on an occult practice. There is nothing amusing about that. It's called planned deception in order to seduce individuals to accept what is wrong and sin before God.

Defenders of the books and their importance to children's growth proclaim them to be good and just imagination. As shown above through the Word of God, imagination betrays what's in a heart. Jeremiah 17:9 9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Rowling, who was brought up on a diet of fantasy and fables and given free reign to her imagination, said in an interview published in Book Links magazine: '"The book is really about the power of the imagination. What Harry is learning to do is to develop his full potential. Wizardry is just the analogy I use." The article goes on to say, "While magic and wizardry inform many plot elements, the books are ultimately about the innate human desire to be unique and special, to form lasting friendships and connections with others, and to see forces for good triumph over forces for evil." [EDU>http://www.edupaperback.org/authorbios/Rowling_JK.html

Rowling has also stated in other interviews, "The idea that we could have a child who escapes from the confines of the adult world and goes somewhere where he has power, both literally and metaphorically, really appealed to me." [Wordsworth>http://www.wordsworth.com/www/authorinfo/Rowling_J/24734764594] .

"...There's always room for a story that can transport readers to another place in which they can thoroughly enjoy themselves....Harry can only get to a certain point in an adventure by breaking some rules. His particular role in the group [of three friends] is conscience. He will break the rule if he thinks he's doing for the greater good...." [Loer>http://www.nbp.org/harry.html]

That may be for non-Christians, but Christians are to face reality and all manner of hardship and problems with the Lord Jesus Christ. Our refuge is Him, not fantasy, and certainly not witchcraft. These are the things our children must learn.

Psalm 46:1 "To the chief Musician for the sons of Korah, A Song upon Alamoth. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; 3 Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah."

As far as breaking the rules for the greater good---that's New Age theology.

Rowling's favorite holiday is Halloween, and she stated she could "see a lot of comic potential in the idea that wizards walk among us." [Shapiro, p.14]

Witches and wizards do walk among us and it is not for our amusement. They worship Satan in various forms and Halloween is a satanic high holiday of human sacrifice which originated with the Celtic druids in the fifth century B.C. In the regular secular world it's a day for a party and a costume. Rowling chose to have Harry's parents killed on Halloween, as well as making sure that Halloween was well celebrated in each book. It was also the night that the writing on the wall appeared as well as the voice that only Harry heard.

Overview & A Few Thoughts

Philippians 4:8-9

"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you."

In the Potter books, Harry Potter, who is presented as a 'good wizard,' is saved from death after his parents are murdered by an "evil wizard." The concept throughout the books is that there are good and bad wizards and witches=white and black magic=meaning, there is "good evil." Harry survived Voldemort's attempt to kill him, although he is left with a  lightning-shaped scar on his forehead, which is the sign of Satan. Many children get this mark put on their forehead in appreciation and allegiance to the books and to Harry, the 'good wizard.' See: Kabbalah Initiation and Practical Kabbalah There are those who defend this 'mark' as simply fun for children. However, that is merely denying the facts known to occultists themselves, who take imagery and icons very seriously.

Those defending the stories as just innocent fables or fantasy need to understand that occultists believe that the fantasy world or otherworld is just as alive as the real world. Their fantasy or supernatural world is in a dimension that we non-occultists are not privy to see. It is more exciting, colorful, happier and wonderful than the real world, which is precisely the way the books present the hidden world of wizardry. Colorful, exciting, happier and so on, than what Harry experiences amongst the wicked Muggles.

Muggles are the blinded and biased humans who either don’t believe in the world of witches or who despise it as evil, making them bigots. The Dursley's, Harry's non-witchcraft loving relatives are presented as such loathsome, disgusting people that no child or adult would want to be identified with them or their equally disgusting behavior and views towards Harry, and other witches and wizards. In fact, the presentation is such that to reject witchery is to be in the same category as these horrible people, something most will not do. Witches and wizards are presented in such a positive light that those 'muggles' that do accept them are viewed as becoming enlightened, albeit fearful or previously ignorant of the 'good' of witches and witchcraft.

In the stories, Harry attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the duration of each book, meaning he's at witchcraft central. The world of witchcraft and wizardry is hidden from the Muggles. Since the occult is 'hidden knowledge' and the practices of the occult are done secretly, it makes sense to have completed that imagery. Occultists thrive on the hidden knowledge and believe that world to parallel reality.  To get to the school each year Harry and the other wizards/witches must enter the secret world by a train which is also hidden from the 'Muggles'. Rowling is using actual witchcraft knowledge. The term dimension, port, portal, gateway, key and similar all are used to enter the other world of the supernatural and witchcraft. The thinking of a separate better 'wizarding' world is reinforced in the dialogue in the books. In fact, once Harry knows it's there, he hates returning to the 'real world.' In the Philosopher's Stone,

"Hagrid simply waved his hand, and said, 'About our world, I mean.Your world. My world. Yer parent's world'. " [p. 50; Emphasis in the original] .

In the Goblet of Fire--Harry says to Dobby after Dobby tells him not to return to school: "But I've got to go back … It's all that's keeping me going. You don't know what it's like here. I don't belong here. I belong in your world -- at Hogwarts." [p. 16]

When Rowling created the stories she determined to create a realistic witchcraft world with imaginary characters. Rowling also extensively uses mythology and names derived from false gods. In 'The Wizard Behind Harry Potter', author Marc Shapiro wrote, "Evil was also a notion that Joanne had to deal with when creating the villainous Lord Voldemort. Rather than create bad guys typical of a children's book----noisy but not truly evil---she decided that evil in the world of Harry Potter would ring true to readers only if it was serious and its consequences fell on characters that the readers loved." [p.57] The inaccuracy in this thinking is found in what is defined as evil. Evil in God's sight includes all forms of witchcraft, wizards, sorcery and divination, etc. and disobedience and rejection of Him, Jesus Christ and His Word. So the premise lacked truth by having the heroes in reality, being an abomination to God.

In reality, Magic and witchcraft itself is defined with terms such as alchemy, astrology, palmistry, numerology and the use of charms and magic, clairvoyance, divination, levitation, evil eye, hypnotism, necromancy, shamanism, telepathy, trance, voodoo and so on. Astrology is considered the common denominator in occultism. "The Treasury of Witchcraft states: Stemming from the Black Arts, and involving goetic premises, assuming the techniques and conditions of occult practices are alchemy, divination, astrology, and levitation" Goetic magic, ...is black magic or sorcery. [Burns p. 276] Hence the "defense against the Dark Arts" is defending against what all wizards/and witches are learning as part of their 'good magic'.

The Hogwarts curriculum features courses in witchcraft and involves: Transfiguration [changing forms], shape-shifting, Herbology, divination, curses, spells and potions and "Defense Against the Dark Arts," and many more practices to be discussed. Defense against' dark arts' or, as in real life, the black arts, is a misnomer. The practices employed by Harry and his good wizard/witch friends are actually part of real life black magic. Think carefully of the implications. Witchcraft and it's elements are learned as they are in real life. The presentation of witchcraft is based on the factual and historical practices of real witches. The witchcraft information and occult symbolism for the most part is not made up. Many of the activities, spells, charms, potions and curses described are real. However, the naive will not recognize that for each of these things to be accomplished in real life, there is demonic activity or possession of the witch or wizard performing the spell, or in some practices, a required human sacrifice.

Witch Students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are involved in  learning witchcraft while they put up with the "muggles". And as the characters appear to learn their witchcraft, so too, are those who are drawn into this world. The books and movie takes adherents into demon possession and necromancy, making all appeal to the innocent and appearing to be fun. As one Chinese boy in Shanghai, after seeing the movie, desired to be the first recruit for Harry Potter's school of wizardry, so too are those who desire to follow and emulate their fictitious hero. Harry Potter fan clubs are popping up worldwide. Understand, God totally abhors idol worship, which is what Potter, the books and the author have become to many. There are children who have memorized pages of the books, reading them over and over again. And not just children. Adults are lapping up the occult writings as well.

Ephesians 5: 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

1 Corinthians 10:14 Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

Keeping in mind that Rowling built the Potter books around the imagery and symbolism of actual witchcraft, the use of colors is very noteworthy. She herself has said the witchcraft was the vehicle for her stories. From the required wearing of black robes to the red robes of witches and druids, use of black candles, cauldrons, magic wands and so on used by real witches and Satanists, we find ample alignment with witchcraft.

An example of the occult view of color is found on the website Witchcraft and Wiccan Magick which has amongst it's many practices the link, Color Magick.>http://www.geocities.com/lavenderwater37/colors.htm

Each of the colors is presented with it's meaning, magical use (clairvoyance, astral travel, divination, etc) astrological use, corresponding element, tool to use (crystal, wand, cauldron, etc), corresponding tarot, and so on. The Zodiac Signs also have corresponding colors for the same purposes. The website also includes the information on the use and or ingesting of blood in rituals and spells, something which is also found in the Potter books. Occult Color symbolism is used in the red found in the boys bedroom at Hogwarts as well as in the red divination room and so on.

Lest one think these occult symbols are harmless and purely fictional, a perusal of websites such as the Oklahoma Gang Investigators Assoc. >http://www.ogia.net/index.htm#tipi%20top > reveals that satanism, witchcraft and the occult are very real and destructive. The occult is not for fun.

From their link 'Introduction to the Occult' >www.ogia.net/oklahoma gang investigators' association/occult.htm> we read:

"Don Rimer is a twenty-eight year veteran of the Virginia Beach Police Department and Currently serves as Spokesperson and Media relations Officer. He is an inter-nationally recognized authority on ritual crime and the occult. He serves as both an Investigator and consultant to agencies throughout the United States. " The article presents various signs of occult involvement, and occult ritual abuse,  which include, * Preoccupation with death. * Preoccupation with the devil, magic, potions, and spells.* Numbers or letters written backwards, "The Devil's Alphabet", * Discussion of participation in a "religious ceremony", * Reference to people dressed in costumes, robes, and masks* Symbols carved, burnt on walls, books, and clothing, * Occult symbols drawn on walls, books, and clothing, * Jewelry, make-up and clothing reflect an occult theme, * An obsession with occult books, games, music, and movies"

Mentioned in the article are also "occult colors," occult items used for worship and what to look for at a ritual crime scene. Those items include many that are found in the Potter books. "Silver implements, Candles or candle wax: Black, White, or Red Occult symbols, Witch's alphabet, [Rune--mentioned in Potter books] Robes: black, white, or red, Books, games, movies, or music with occult theme, Bones: human or animal, Blood: human or animal, Items from a grave robbery: coffin, tombstone, or dirt, Ashes, Rooms painted red or black, Jewelry with occult symbols, etc.

It will be shown that much of what has been listed as part of rituals is found in various parts of the Potters books. If Police officers take serious note of the occult and its destructive influence and use on children, youth and adults, hadn't we?

The occult thrives on mystery and hidden secrets and symbolism. Rowling has intertwined witchcraft, mythology, the occult symbolism and iconology throughout the books, using imagery, that upon researching, reveals the deeper occult meaning. What may appear as innocent will be well recognized by those in the occult. These books and many more sources provide a level of initiation into the occult that curiosity and a desire to understand will help readers to seek the details. In fact, since many are reading these books in school, projects and reports will likely permeate the minds of children who will have to learn for example, what a rune is, or aura or other occult words which would be foreign to them. Scriptures never fail to provide the insight we need to know whether something is acceptable or not before God.

God warned in Deuteronomy 18:9-12 "When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee"

The list of nine practices forbidden by God in Deuteronomy are identified as "abominations unto the Lord." It's that serious. We have no business being part of, enjoying or considering something to be innocent or alright that is an abomination to our Lord. Various other Scriptures throughout the Old and New Testament discuss these very issues.

To make a child "to pass through the fire," refers to the pagan custom of sacrificing children to the pagan god Molech.

" useth divination," is defined as, "determine by lot or magical scroll; soothsayer.; oracle, witchcraft.  Divination is also defined as "The act of divining; a foretelling future events, or discovering things secret or obscure, by the aid of superior beings, or by other than human means." Divination is found with channeling, tarot, astrology, tea leaf reading, palm reading and so on in the Potter books.

"An observer of times." From the Hebrew, means, enchanter, observe(-r of) times, soothsayer, sorcerer.

"An enchanter." The Hebrew word means properly, to hiss, i.e. whisper a (magic) spell, divine, enchanter. Webster defined an enchanter as, "One who enchants; a sorcerer or magician; one who has spirits or demons at his command; one who practices enchantment, or pretends to perform surprising things by the agency of demons."

"A witch." From the Hebrew--to whisper a spell, i.e. to inchant or practise magic:-- sorcerer, (use) witch(-craft).

"A charmer." "One that charms, or has power to charm; one that uses or has the power of enchantment" A Dictionary of Mysticism reports that a charm is "any magical word, formula, incantation, object, sign or amulet supposed to possess occult power."  Webster tells us that a charm is an "incantation," "the chanting or reciting of a MAGIC SPELL," " an act or expression believed to have Magic power," "Amulet." An Amulet is: a charm (as an ornament) often inscribed with a magic incantation or symbol to protect the wearer against evil or to aid him." A charmer is called an enchanter or magician! Roget's Thesaurus provides synonyms for charms: enchantment, magic spell, spell, hex, amulet and talisman. The verb form of "charm" means to bewitch or put under a magic spell. [Burns, p 57]

"A consulter with familiar spirits." One who asks or inquires of an Ob, that is, a Python, or divining spirit. This spirit was supposed to be in the person of the conjurer, and to be able to reveal to him what was secret or hidden in the future

Leviticus 19:31 Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
Leviticus  20:6 And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people.

"a wizard." From the Hebrew, "properly, a knowing one; specifically, a conjurer; (by impl) a ghost:--wizard. Others define it as a male witch. One who makes use of magic formulas (potions) or casting spells.

"A necromancer." A person who is supposed to foretell the future by communicating with the dead; a magician, sorcerer, magician, a conjurer.

Each one of the listed abominations to the Lord is used in the Potter books. Aside from the dire warnings mentioned in Deuteronomy and other Scriptures, Paul said in Galatians 5:19-21, "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

Jesus made a very clear statement that needs to be applied. In John 14:15, He said, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."

1 Peter 1:14 "As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
