Hebrew Roots, The Four Waves & Their Roots

 Lying Signs and Wonders

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and  wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."   Matt. 24:24

Et tu, Billy Graham??

Some might think it strange to find Joel's Army/Signs and Wonders teachings promoted by someone many consider to be the world's greatest evangelist. In his book, The Holy Spirit, in a chapter titled "The Sign Gifts," Billy Graham wrote that he expects miracles to increase at the end of the age in order to "vindicate the authenticity of the gospel." Like the modern false prophets, Dr. Graham refers to the Old Testament prophets Joel and Hosea to support this misinterpretation of Scripture.

"And today when the gospel is proclaimed on the frontiers of the Christian faith that approximate the first century situation, miracles still sometimes accompany the advance of the gospel. As indicated by both the prophets Hosea and Joel, as we approach the end of the age we may expect miracles to increase." 1

" I have just stated that as we approach the end of the age I believe we will see a dramatic recurrence of signs and wonders which will demonstrate the power of God to a skeptical world. Just as the powers of Satan are being unleashed with greater intensity, so I believe God will allow signs and wonders to be performed." 2

How like Rick Joyner who said, "Extraordinary miracles will be common while those considered great today will be performed almost without notice by young believers." 3 However, we are reminded that signs and wonders are a sign of Satan, in the last days, and the coming anti-christ.

2 Thessalonians 2:9-15

"Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle."

Billy Graham has stated repeatedly that Jesus Christ is not the only way to heaven (See article Deceptions: Billy Graham).  In 1974, he convened the ecumenical Lausanne Consultation on World Evangelism which brought together Protestant and Catholic leaders from all over the world to unite Christian churches to evangelize the world before the year A.D. 2000. C. Peter Wagner of Fuller Theological Seminary also helped prepare the way for the ecumenical movement through promotion of the signs and wonders movement.  Dr. Graham quotes Peter Wagner’s explanation that spiritual gifts:

". . .are given to the body universal, . . . with many local manifestations. . . This explains why, for example, a local church or even an entire denomination may not have been given the gift of tongues, while other parts of the body might have it." 4

Although Billy Graham distinguished between genuine and counterfeit signs and tongues, he recommended the teachings of Peter Wagner as a good source of information about the true spiritual gifts:

". . .tongues are used to further the Kingdom of God and to edify believers. . . .many are convinced that we may be living in what Scripture calls the 'latter days.' Both Joel and Hosea prophesy that in those days great manifestations of the Spirit and many of the sign gifts will reappear. We may be living in such a period of history. Certainly we cannot blind ourselves to the fact that many of the sign gifts which vindicate the authenticity of the gospel are appearing at this hour." 5

What is missing is the concept that tongues is languages, so that the things of God can be proclaimed to every nation. C. Peter Wagner was mentored by John Wimber and Rabbi Cohen, who presented Rick Joyner at the Messiah '99 Conference, proudly announced that he owns a Peter Wagner book with an "Acts Chapter 2 or 3 that is titled 'The Messianic Jews.'"

A former assistant to John Wimber from the outset of the Vineyard movement wrote of Wimber's profound influence on the global ecumenical movement:

". . .The huge end-times harvest, revival and 'awakening'…John taught it, prophesied it, trained up and equipped thousands of workers for it, and personally laid hands on every major player to 'receive' the 'fire' that fell. It is disputable. . .John carried the restoration theology out of the Fuller 'think tank' into the world at large, and has taken his place now among the 'greats' of apostasy. . having done more single-handedly to bring the restoration and dominion message to the world than any figure in history since Wesley…John was this movement's 'acceptable anointed evangelist' of restoration. . .Wagner has referred to Wimber as his 'mentor' and I believe that was true." 6

Another vehicle for ecumenism which developed around 1990 was The Kaleidoscope Global Action Plan whose Working Group members included Jay Gary. Goals #109-112, mentioned in Part II of Al Dager's recent report, "The World Christian Movement", reveal the deliberate dissemination of the signs and wonders movement through John Wimbers' teachings on "power evangelism".

"109. See the decade of 1990-2000 close as having been the greatest decade in Christian history for signs and wonders, miracles, conversions, evangelism and evangelization; with the greatest sign and wonder being Christians loving one another and gathering in unity everywhere.

"110. Enable 300,00 itinerant charismatic evangelists to target unevangelized cities, countries, and peoples by 2000, demonstrating power evangelism (John Wimber’s term), power healing, power intercession, and power encounters."

"112. Deliberately exercise power evangelism in the world’s least evangelized and most hostile environments so that by AD 2000 power Christianity (gifted ministries of signs and wonders) is not enjoyed solely in Christian lands." 7.

Wimber’s influence spanned the globe and infiltrated most denominations. The aforementioned former assistant to John Wimber states that Wimber's theology was dispensed globally.

". . .I have early newsletters of the Vineyard where the "Kingdom Now" message is plain and clear, and the dozens of seminars where John took Holiness teaching, perfection, restoration and dominion theology to thousands of pastors globally. . .even tapes of him teaching on Joel's Army.. His work indeed was done right on time (remember the article?) when "fire" that he had been teaching would "fall". . .did fall. . .and the great end-time "harvest" he had been prophesying for twenty years had indeed apparently "come". . .in Toronto." 8

John Wimber was the Founder of the Vineyard Movement and worked closely with C. Peter Wagner in Power Evangelism & Church Growth. Eleven of the Seek God articles cover various aspects of John Wimber's teachings. As well, I have his testimony tape, and have researched his background and teachings.

Utilizing Fuller Seminary methodologies, which he helped to develop, Wimber preached "Kingdom Now' restoration and dominionist theology. Many of his published songs, which have infiltrated all denominations, contain those messages, although most "evangelicals" for example, would not recognize the meanings behind them. He also taught, as did and do the others, the expectation of a 'great end-time harvest and revival'. Wimber traveled on Fuller's behalf for four years in the early 1970's, and successfully introduced Cho's cell church theory in his "Church Growth" seminars. After he left Fuller, he effectively took restoration theology to most of the major denominations of the world. His seminars included Healing (how to heal!), Davidic worship (how to get 'beyond the veil', and into the throne room!), Holiness (perfection in the physical body of the saints - manifested sons theology), signs and wonders, apostolic offices, etc. all of which are part of Manifest Sons of God heresy.

According to Nancy Flint who worked directly with John, and corroborated from other sources, " John is directly responsible for promoting, equipping, and developing methodologies that resulted in the aberrant "manifestations" called the "Toronto Blessing". The major players in this movement were all personally trained by Wimber, and had directly received their teaching of and entry into (by the laying on of hands) what they call the 'Holy Spirit' directly from Wimber. Pastors who promote and operate in this same "power" force, are the major "players" in the Promise Keepers movement. This thinly veiled political constituency is operating behind the scenes to change our government using the massive numbers of their constituency as leverage to gain entry into the law-making process."

According to Scripture, Jesus said there would be an increase in signs and wonders in the last days, not to ‘vindicate and authenticate the gospel’ but rather to deceive the elect:

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." Matt. 24:24 [Mark 13:22; Luke 21:8]

"Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition. . .Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders." II Thess. 2:3,9

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." I Tim. 4:1

Jesus also said that "a wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign" and gave a most sobering warning:

"Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in they name? and in they name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Matt. 7:22-23
