But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

Michael John Rood of "A Rood Awakening", who is a self professed former Baptist, and according to his own statements, left the "Baptist cult" to become leadership for at least the greater part of two decades, in the Way International cult, which he conveniently fails to mentions in his biography. Mr. Rood claims to be a Messianic Jew, with Jewish heritage, a Torah Observant Levite, and many other titles, depending upon who his audience has been. He interprets End Time prophetic scenarios from the Bible and attempts to prove that the annual timing of the Feasts of Israel from the Old Testament are part and parcel with his projected time schedule for events he believes are soon to come to pass. Or, according to his corrected predictions via his often re-corrected, "Corrected Hebrew Calendar," already came to pass, and when the predictions didn't happen, he updated his predictions for when the "Day of the Lord" began, or will begin. Mr. Rood calls his zodiac based calendar, "The Astronomically and Agriculturally Corrected Biblical Hebrew Calendar". Rood speaks at seminars around the United States, and is promoted on The Prophecy Club. He is also broadcast on the Christian satellite system Sky Angel, which claims to be for advancing the Gospel of Jesus Christ and he is promoted via the National Religious Broadcasters yearly Convention. Michael Rood is promoted as THE person to clarify the "Hebrew Roots" of the Christian faith, and he has disseminated many videos and audio teachings to attempt to prove his point. He presents himself with various titles and teachings based on the group he is indoctrinating. When presented as a "Messianic Jewish" rabbi, the implication is that he is Jewish and has a Jewish education which would give him a "truer" insight into the Old Testament and prophecy, meaning there are truths that are hidden to the uninitiated. He has no such background.

Michael Rood stated on his newly revised website which appears to be more Christian friendly on the surface, "We are excited to announce Michael Rood's new book. Michael Rood invites you to "Leave your western gentile mind behind", as he explores the scriptures, from a Hebrew perspective in: The Pagan-Christian Connection Exposed. What can a Jewish Theologian teach a Christian about Christianity? Plenty! "

In order to have inroads to Christian congregations, he has used the title Reverend, and uses the term Jesus, only as a way to explain why he rejects that pagan name. Instead he says he believes in the Jewish Messiah, who he calls Yahshua, which is a made up name, and uses that as a catalyst to teach his "new" understanding of the New Testament and the Jewishness of Jesus.

While challenged about not having a definitive statement of faith on a sacred name forum, Michael Rood wrote to that forum in 2005. Here's an excerpt from that note:

"...I think that the book will be a good statement of faith.

I dont pretend to share my faith with someone who wants a few bullet points to pidgeon hole me. I share my faith free of charge at every seminar, sky angel broadcast, and Israelnet.tv airing. No, on second thought, they are not at all free - I have had to pay with my life for years, and all that has been donated continues to pay for these "free" things. Every seminar night costs us thousands. We went broke four years ago doing them and we had to pack up and go home. This is how we get the good news out to the world.

Sensational??? I agree. I am a fanatic for the Almighty. I think the plan of redemption is the most enthralling reality in the universe. I get chills every time I tell the stories in the Scriptures. My Elohim is absolutely sensational - far beyond my feeble attempts to demonstrate.

Faith? I don't own a house. I have no life insurance. I have no car insurance. I rode busses in Jerusalem at the time they were being blown up every week. I get no paycheck. I have not had a vacation in 10 years. I get room and board just like everyone else on my staff. I live by faith - some help me along the way, but that is all up to them. I don't state faith, I prefer to live it.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to vent my faith.

The book Michael Rood is possibly referring to, The Pagan-Christian Connection Exposed, has the following for a 'statement of faith', and recalling that Michael Rood is not Jewish unless he recently converted to Judaism in some form, which would mean clear rejection of the New Testament and Jesus Christ.

"Being that I am a Jewish follower of the Jewish Messiah, I hope that you will bear with me in this matter: I prefer to use the Lord's Hebrew name, Y'shua, rather than His Gentile nickname, Jesus. I love the name Yahshua." [page 76,77]

"...let me say that I consider myself to be a believer in, and a follower of Y'shua, whom I believe with all my heart, soul, mind and strength to be the Messiah of the GOD of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Ya'akov." (page 78)

Jehovah's witnesses, Mormons, and even Muslims likely would agree that Jesus is the "Messiah". They just do not believe that He is God manifest in the flesh.

Michael Rood rejects all denominational and what many would view as "historical Christianity." He believes that those who remain in those settings and beliefs are part of a counterfeit Biblical truth which comes from Satan. He teaches the rejection of anything pertaining to Christianity, calling it all pagan, from holidays to terminology, and advocates a return to his definitions of a Biblical observance of the weekly Sabbath, the practice of the feasts and the annual Levitical Holy Days, and adds in his interpretation of those things. Those who dare reject his teachings are viewed as going to receive divine retribution.

Promoting his latest tours for 2005, Michael Rood again has his Karaite friend, Nehemiah Gordon, listed as his co-presenter. Mr. Gordon, who appears with Michael Rood on some of the Sky Angel shows, fully rejects the New Testament and Jesus Christ, which goes against Sky Angel's and the NRB's own statements of faith. Those shows must obviously include the presumption that Jesus was actually a Karaite.

In the article Michael John Rood: Messianic Karaite Rabbi, facts about the Karaite Jews and their full rejection of Jesus Christ and the New Testament were discussed and are all the more interesting when we know that Michael Rood declared in "The Pagan Christian Connection Exposed", published in 2004 by Christian publishing company Bridge-Logos, that he and his wife Judith took Karaite vows for their 2002 wedding.

"Aviv Calendar and Marriage Vows"

"The Karaites have even incorporated the observance of the Aviv Calendar into the marriage ceremony. To this very day, every marrying couple takes a solemn oath to observe the true biblical calendar. The oath is inscribed in every Karaite ketubah, or marriage contract. In it, the couple swears, “by the covenant of Mt. Sinai... to observe the holy appointed times of YHWH according to the sighting of the New Moon and the finding of the Aviv in the Holy Land of Israel.” This same formula can be found in Karaite ketubot, dating back over 1000 years. By making this vow, the marrying couple expresses their loyalty to the Torah and enters as full adult members into Karaite society. The marriage ceremony of my wife Judith and me was performed in the ancient portico of Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem. At that time, we entered into the traditional Karaite covenant to observe the feasts of Yahweh according to the ancient biblical reckoning of time. Centuries ago, a form of this same vow was incorporated into the standard Karaite liturgy. Even now, on every High Holiday, the Karaite cantor recites the vow, and the entire congregation responds with a resounding “Emet” “Truth!” (pg 115-116) [bolding added]

In the one promotion, Michael Rood makes the false statements that "the Hebrew version of Matthew, preserved in Europe but virtually unknown in most of the world, tells a very different story - a story that shows how Y'shua taught the Torah from a solidly "Karaite" Jewish perspective". ... Michael Rood, although very carefully, has taught that the foundation manuscripts and language of the New Testament was Aramaic or Hebrew, not Greek. From Tape 2 of his tape series, Title: The 70th Week Ministry of the Messiah, Michael states that the Apostle John spoke the language of the Jewish people and probably didn't know Greek. In spite of Rood's deviant historical facts, we know that Greek was the language of commerce at that time and place.

Michael Rood states in virtually every teaching, something similar to the above or is found in Tape 4 of that same series, "...we can see how they can take the Hebrew and translate it into the Greek language, not fully understanding the feasts, and come up with a morning type situation. Just as the KJ translators did here..."

Regarding the Hebrew Matthew that Rood claims was "the ancient Hebrew text of Matthew, copied a millennium ago by Shem Tov Ibn Shaprut,". The supposed Hebrew Matthews or Shem Tob Matthew are from the 1400-1500 range CE. Precisely, ShemTob is dated 1380, while DuTillet and Muenster are about 1550. Together they make up the "Middle Ages Matthews" but, they are very different, and are in disagreement with each other in various places, and as one stated, that is one of the ironies. Hugh Schonfeld and James Trimm mostly push DuTillet. Michael Rood and George Howard promote the Shem Tob version. The Greek Matthew is from the 250-400 CE range. And so it goes. Michael Rood is currently, on his website, promoting and selling a "bible" know as the ISR scriptures. What the so called translators (who are unnamed) of this "bible" did, was to take a text that was used in the translation of the KJV Bible, and then alter it by inserting other texts in various areas to promote an anti Christian theological bias. This version alters key passages that would demonstrate the Deity of Christ. The late Chris "CJ" Koster was one of the people apparently involved with this project. A perusal of the numerous articles written by Mr. Koster, reveals that he called his messiah YAHshua (he insisted that the Name Jesus was "pagan"), but did not believe that He was divine, denying His Deity, and therefore denying Him as the Christ.

We are reminded of Jesus' warning against such people:

Mathew 23:25 "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity."

Various individuals relate Mr. Rood's very defensive posturing, anger and blustering and refusing to give his background information when asked. Others recount that when Michael has actually given a 'resume' to pastors, and particularly one church board, they found all his references were bogus and noticed that his listed 'college' was that of The Way International. 1a Hiding The Way International involvement is clearly an attempt to cover his cult background and leanings. One of the main beliefs of The Way International is the rejection of the divinity of Jesus Christ.

We know that a man of God is to have certain qualities, so that shame is not brought upon our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

So, who is Michael John Rood?

Michael Rood's WAY Days

By 1981, 29 year old Michael John Rood of "A Rood Awakening" had been in The Way International cult for nine years. 1 Today, at age 51 his current presentation of religious beliefs seem to be a reflection of The Way International theology and indoctrination practices plus. It would not be a surprise that he does employ that form of teaching because Michael Rood was in leadership as, at the very least, Limb Coordinator of The Way cult in Washington D.C. 2

Having joined The Way International in 1972 at the age of 20 and claiming to be a former Marine marksman in 1981, Michael Rood was introduced to a Way Twig meeting as "The Rev. Mr. Michael Rood," according to the October 13, 1981, Washington Post article called, Giving Thanks for Array of Blessings,

"....The Rev. Mr. Michael Rood," The Way's Washington area director -- "limb coordinator" in Way parlance -- and the honored guest at this twig.
A nine-year veteran of the Way, Rood, 29, still displays vestiges of his years as a Marine Corps sergeant...
... he leans forward intently, elbows on the knees of his gray garbardine trousers, and announces the topic of his sermon. It is "The Word of God is the Will of God," which also happens to be the group's motto...The Pharisees, he says, were "jerks."
"You can't trust anyone these days," he says in his flat, twangy Grand Rapids, Mich., voice. "You can only trust God and his word."
"All the negatives, fears, questions about life, insecurity complexes -- all that goes" if you believe in The Way, Rood says. The members nod in vigorous assent. "The word of God is still the will of God and if that's the only thing you have to believe, it's pretty simple..." 3

Being Limb coordinator of Washington D.C is not to be taken lightly. In order for an individual to attain the leadership position of Limb, they would have to have totally embraced The Way International theology. They would have believed fully in the purposes and procedures and have proven themselves, resulting in being hand picked by the top Way leadership. Their obedience to that leadership had to be unquestionable because TWI was/is an authoritarian leadership.

Update: In a letter to SeekGod.ca an attendee of the 2005 National Religious Broadcasters Convention (NRB) spoke with Michael Rood's associates including his wife Judith. When asked about being in The Way International, the following was noted:

Email: "...Michael Rood's wife, Judith, the same question. She told me that, yes, Michael had been a member of The Way, but that was just when he was 17."

That goes entirely against public record, and eye witness information. Michael Rood may have joined The Way International at the age of 17, but that also contradicts what he told a reporter in 1981. The lowest level of leadership in The Way is twig coordinator (home fellowship group), then a twig area coordinator (overseeing a few nearby twigs). Above that is Branch Coordinator, which is roughly a city-wide position, depending on local geography. The Limb leaders are generally over a state or two, depending on size of state and of TWI following in that area. Above that is president and cabinet, so readers must understand that being a Limb is high up and clearly a position of authority.

The Greasespot Cafe is a web site for former and current Way people. In a discussion thread about the 7th Corps members, of which Michael Rood apparently was a graduate, Michael is remembered fondly by his fellow Way members. Being 7th Corps means he graduated Way College in 1979, with probable attendance approximately 1976 to 1979. According to John Juedes, "7 Corps graduated 279 in 1979. The Way College of Emporia opened in 1975, so odds are Michael spent a couple of years there." 4

The people in the 7th Corps discussion also posted Michael's current "in costume" pictures from his old 6001.com site, which is no longer his site as he lost the domain name. The same photos are found on his current site, michaelrood.com.

"June 11, 2002 "...Look. It's our Corps brother Mike Rood. (shows Rood's old link) I remember when he was hawking car buffing franchises in residence. Interesting site. I suppose we have all changed tremendously in the last 23 years in one way or another. Mike if you are reading this I mean it as a compliment, really, but when I saw this pic I was reminded of a ZZ Top concert I went to..."

June 13, 2002 "....that's quite a faxxintin' pic ya got of ole Rood...I mean....i think he was once in the military too once wasn't he...was he training fer something bigger..."

June 17, 2002 "...Wow - Mike looks, well, alot older than I do. I never would have recognized him. I remember that ex-military, ramrod straight posture who was being groomed for leadership. Was he ordained?..."5

According to former Way member, Karl Kahler, in his book, The Cult that Snapped, "The Corps is the priesthood of the ministry, the pool from which the clergy is chosen and all top posts are filled." 6

In the 9th Corps thread on the Greasespot Cafe Forum, Michael's ex-wife Sara Rood or Sara Myers, aka Sally Myers was discussed. Sara divorced Michael December 7, 1994, with the divorce ratified March 14, 1995, leaving Sara with custody of their four girls and Michael apparently free to embark on his "ministry." The divorce was just prior to Michael embarking on his stated Torah Observant lifestyle and the release of his book, The Mystery of Iniquity. It is also just prior to launching, what is described by his staff as, "his speaking career." In 2002 Michael married Judith Dithers. It is unclear how Michael justifies divorce, while claiming to be a leader of God's people and Torah Observant.

It can be concluded by the discussion thread that Sara was also 7th or 9th Corps in The Way International.

On a pub7.ezboard.comForum, run by Grease Spot Cafe, and which has been locked down, we see discussion which includes Rood, and his co-worker James Louis. Jamie has the YaakovLevi.com web site , the fundraiser and Tour site for Rood. Stevie Kay is Jamie's first wife, whom he divorced around 1995. He is now with Connie Louis, nee Adams. The discussion thread reveals Jamie Louis's involvement in The Way International and also reveals that Michael Rood was still conducting and teaching in Way home fellowships as late as 1994 or 1995. Please understand the reference to "get together with believers." Way doctrine teaches that only fellow Way people are believers. So we have "fellow believers" noting that both Michael Rood and Jamie Louis were ordained into the Way and placed in leadership positions.

Update: Due to the 2007 controversial breakup of A Rood Awakening Ministries, the organization was split into two groups. One held by Jamie Louis in the original A Rood Awakening! Ministries Oregon office, and one held by Michael Rood and some new staff. Michael Rood launched a new corporation in Michigan, where his new office is, called A Rood Awakening! Ministries International. Two new websites were launched by the Rood camp, one called reallyrood.com in competition with the original aroodawakening.tv, unroododespertar.tv and aroodawakening.com, all of which have since been shut down. The new michaelroodministries.com was launched in direct competition to the original michaelrood.com, which has been shutdown. Jamie Louis also included in his Ya'akovlevi site the name of a new business called Torah to the Nations, based in Oregon. Michael Rood Roots

It was reported in the Washington Post article that Michael spoke with a "twangy Grand Rapids, Mich., voice." It should be noted that Michael Rood, at various speaking engagements has claimed to have been raised in Grand Rapids, Greenville, Belding/Belmont, Lansing, Lansing area, all in Michigan. He claims also to have been raised on a farm in any one of those same centers, depending on who he is speaking to.

However, a perusal of Public library held High School and underclassmen school yearbooks reveals no Michael Rood having graduated in Greenville nor Belding, nor specifically Rockford High School, which is in in Rockford. Belmont youth attend Rockford High. Nor did Michael graduate any Grand Rapids high schools, according to the Grand Rapids Dept. of Education. In fact senior Belding residents had no knowledge of any Roods whatsoever, except for the ones residing in Greenville who have the Greenville Home Improvement business. Their names are Rick and Ryan Rood.

A telephone conversation with Ryan Rood's wife, revealed they had never heard of Michael John Rood. Rick Rood, in his late 40's, also had never heard of Michael John Rood. Rick Rood referred us to a John Rood, also in the Greenville area. A conversation with his wife, who is in her 60's, revealed they had also never heard of him. John Rood does have a brother, Michael who lives up north, but that is not Michael John Rood.

According to his April 2003 plea for money Newsletter, Michael again made reference to being raised on a Michigan farm:

"...When I was a kid on the farm in Michigan, we had to pay illegal aliens more than this to pick apples!" 8

Due to Mr. Rood's claim, a search was done for Rood farms or orchards in Michigan. The one Rood farm/orchard listed in Michigan that actively hires migrant workers from Arizona, and advertises on line and through State agriculture programs, belongs to 75 year old Paul Rood, principle owner of the operation. A telephone conversation to him in his Covert, Michigan farm, just south of Grand Rapids, revealed that Paul Rood has never heard of Michael John Rood and he used to hire nephews about 40 years ago, but knows none by that name.

A Paul and Judith Rood listed as living in Commerce, Michigan have had their phone disconnected. Commerce is in northern Michigan, and is known for it's cherry orchards. In Grand Rapids over 18 telephone numbers with the name of Rood were called, which was all that are listed in Grand Rapids. None were relatives of Michael John Rood, or had ever heard of him. The first gentleman spoken with stated he used to be the only Rood in Grand Rapids. People with the name of Rood were queried all over Grand Rapids and Kent county, and no one knows who he is.

If the reader is starting to get a picture that maybe Michael John Rood is not quite accurate in his statements, further investigation into his statements, history and claims will reveal a side to Mr. Rood that he prefers remain hidden.

Update: According to a correspondent, Michael Rood, while speaking in Grand Rapids, May 2004, "stated point-blank that he was "born in Greenville and grew up in Ionia." Greenville is a small town about 30 miles northeast of GR and Ionia is a small town about 30 miles due
east of GR." Either people have withheld knowledge of knowing him, or he is simply an unknown to people with the name of Rood. > end update

Does it matter that Michael Rood hides his Way background? Yes it does.

Is it important to understand that Michael has not publicly repented of or made mention of rejecting those Way teachings whereby he led many to destruction? Yes it is.

We are called to do things honest before men. Godly leadership is in fact to be impeccable and be proven that who and what they say they are, is indeed true. Paul said that he was in essence an open book, in contrast to those who would deceive.

2 Timothy 3:8 Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
9 But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.
