"Christian" Occult Symbols:

Please note: Research into the Hebrew Roots & Messianic movements constitutes research into Judaism as well as the occult. We fully respect each persons right to believe or utilize what resources they choose. We however, see a clear distinction in believing the Messiah has come versus utilizing resources which still await His coming. That is how and why we must evaluate all to Christ and the New Testament as well as the Tenach. We do not wish to edit or criticize Judaism, but recognize it as distinct from our Christian beliefs, just as many in Judaism also see a distinction and separateness from our beliefs, and we jointly have mutual respect for our differences and each other.

Hexagrams & Doves

Act 17: 29-30

“Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent:”

Figure 8   Israel's Jubilee Logo    18

If one goes to the web site of Israel's Jubilee Celebration [http://www.israeljubilee.com/] held in 1998, where Rabbi Cohen, Rick Joyner and Stephen Strang shared the stage with Benny Hinn, Mike Bickle and other notables, one finds this same interlaced hexagram with an upside down fiery ‘dove.’ It has the same use of color as described for the Maitreya Logo.

Calvary Chapel Jerusalem has a star of David on each page in the site. http://www.calvarychapel.com/jerusalem/index.htm

Notice that Calvary Chapel and Figures 8 above, also have the unusual presentation of an upside down dove.

Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa 19

Harvest Christian Fellowship  (Calvary Chapel, Reston, Virginia >http://www.calvarychapel.org/reston/hcfwri.htm)

The sphere has the appearance of the all-seeing eye. "Maitreya" states that "When you say: 'From the center where the Will of God is known," which is Shambella, visualize a great sphere of WHITE LIGHT. " [Masonic and Occult Symbols Illustrated, p. 269; Dr. Cathy Burns; Sharing, 1998]

Update. Harvest Christian Fellowship has redesigned their webpage and logo. It is now called www.harvestreston.org  For awhile the colored logo was changed to the whiter version, and has now been changed.

19B.  The book above, from the Episcopal Church's Charismatic Renewal, states in the title that it is a "new revelation" which has been added to the Bible's book of The Acts of the Apostles. The sub-title reads, "Where we are now in the continuing Acts of the Holy Spirit."

Note the comparison of the upside down dove and the images below.

God said not to add to or take away from His Word.

Update: I received an email that I feel important to share. ".... after reading the "Doves & Hexagrams" article--could it be that, with the dove at least, the occult has taken something of God's and perverted it, rather than Christians "christianizing" an occult symbol? The Scripture does say the "Spirit of God descending like a dove," (Matt. 3:16, also Mk. 1:10, Jn. 1:32), and "the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him" (Luke 3:22). I do agree that we are not to make "images" of God, nor are we to copy anything from the occult or to have an appearance of evil. Perhaps you might consider noting that the Holy Ghost (the *true* Holy Ghost) *did* come in the form of a dove to light upon Jesus, but that certainly does not mean we are to elevate the dove above other creatures, or put it on churches. The dove is not the Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit came in the *form* of a dove, but He is not a dove. It also might be worthwhile to find out how long the dove has been used as an occultic symbol? Before or after Christianity?"..."

My response to that email was: "...Re: the dove. I take your thoughts seriously. It is not my intent to negate or obscure what was obviously an incredible and holy event. A sign for the Jews, who Scripture tells us, require a sign in order to believe. I think the occult have definitely tried to take something which was obviously of God and made it perverse. In saying that, we are not to require signs and as you say, we are not to make images of God in any form. ... I in no way wish to negate Scripture that shows the rightful usage or purpose of something. If I missed them it was probably with the idea that Christians would recognize the proper use and purpose of the dove. Thanks for bringing it to my attention."

See also: Elimination of the Cross

Most Calvary Chapels have removed crosses in favor of the upside down dove symbol. Some of the reasons expressed by some adherents are that crosses are of pagan origin— which they are. Jesus did not get nailed to a cross because it was a Christian symbol. However, there is a difference between removing a cross knowing there is no image man can make to represent God, and eliminating the cross because one rejects the finished work of the cross.  For More on This please see: David Hall & Michael J Rood; The Rev. Michael Rood

Many have likened and represent in icons or pictures, the Holy Spirit as a dove, which we of course find referenced in Scripture. When queried about origins of the Calvary Chapel logo, Chuck Smith wrote:" The dove was designed by Kerney Erickson and it is a symbol of the Holy Spirit descending upon the church. Taken from the baptism of Jesus when the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descended and lighted upon Him. chuck" 20

The headlong dive-bombing of this dove does not denote "lighting'' on anything. Paul wrote in Act 17: 29-30

“Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man’s device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent:”

There is a serious contradiction in the issue of the dove in Chuck Smith's own teachings.  It is reported that Calvary Chapelites supporting the exchange of the cross for the dove derive their belief from Hislop’s 1858 book, The Two Babylons, where Hislop attempted to show the pagan origins of various Christian symbols.21 However, Hislop also claims pagan origins for the dove symbol. *See pages 51, 78, 126, and 141-144. ** 22  Figure 25, on page 79, shows one of the persons of the Assyrian Trinity depicted as a dove. Chuck Smith recommends this book in his Commentary on the book of Revelation, which is accessed through Chuck Missler's web site.

In  chapter 17, v. 5, Pastor Smith says:

v.5 Suggested reading for history students: The Two Babylons by Alexander Hislop. This book connects ancient Babylon with the corrupt church.

Other Calvary Chapels (CC) such as Fullerton, endorse the book as well. [http://www.calvarychapel.com/fullerton/Bstudy/01Gen/01GEN11.htm] RAY STEDMAN whose writings are posted on Lambert Dolphins web site, also recommends it. Stedman states: “ Alexander Hislop, an authoritative writer in this field, has written a book called “The Two Babylons,” which should be of great interest…” http://www.best.com/~dolphin/babel.html

Doves represent peace in the secular world and are generally presented standing or flying with an olive twig. Pentecostals and other denominations show the dove in normal flight or with wings spread as if hovering. Other 'Christian' organizations are displaying the upside down dove, like TBN, St. Matthews Press and the United Church in Canada.  The other organizations that present the upside down or diving head first dove are found in the occult, which is very odd.

Karl Kellner founded the Ordo Templis Orientis (O.T.O) and taught ritual magic followed by Theodore Reuss and Satanist Alistair Crowley. Below are the original seals, symbols and logos used by Kellner, Crowley and Reuss, many of which are in use today by Satanists and Witches.

Update 7/22/01~ Peter Keonig, whose site originally supplied the above information and following information, has written and stated that we have "factual mistakes regarding the history of the O.T.O. e.g. Carl Kellner was never a member or founder of the O.T.O. which was founded one year after his death." Rather Kellner was associated with Reuss,  who "came up with the idea of the O.T.O., completing his invention by 1912; it was a mish-mash of Craft Masonry, AASR, MM and the sexual mysticism of Tantra." "According to both Reuss and Franz Hartmann, Kellner was initiated into the 'Humanitas' lodge at Neuhäusl...Kellner became inactive in regular Masonry, transferring his energies to the higher degrees as represented by the AASR and MM. Kellner knew Yarker personally,... We can only speculate as to why Kellner was interested in the AASR and MM; perhaps he was looking for a way to recruit members for his own private Hatha Yoga group. As Reuss had the rights to these rites in ... Kellner subsidised him with cash to organise several Masonic bodies for him. Mention of several of Kellner's AASR and MM degrees may be found in Reuss's 'Oriflamme'. In December 1902 in London John Yarker appointed Kellner to the 96° of MM, and "Sovereign Honorary General Grandmaster... of our Order". On 27 December 1903 Kellner was made 33°, 90° and 96° for both England and Germany. In 1904 he became "Special Representative" of the MM for America but by this time he was already seriously ill. Kellner's name never appeared in an O.T.O. context while he was alive...." see #23 ftnote.

We must emphasize, we are noting and comparing the very unusual presentation of an upside down dove. Figures 9 & 10 are taken from the Ordo Templis Orientis – Karl Kellner Photographs and Documents. 23  Figure 11 is today’s logo for the O.T.O.

In a very quick search on the O.T.O site and a few other searches were found rituals re: the serpent and the dove and Crowley’s use of the dove in gematria. [See: Kabbalah: Gematria and Numerology] When queried about the occult use of the upside down dove in the O.T.O logos and seals, the reply from a Mr. Peter Koenig was: “dove = holy spirit.”

However, we’re not talking about the same ‘spirit’ are we?

1 John 4:1

" Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

Perhaps what is disturbing is knowing that, like Jacob Prasch, Mike Oppenheimer, Bill Schnoebelen and Tal Brooke, many of Calvary Chapels pastors were also heavily involved in either Eastern Mysticism, Edgar Cayce, Satanism, witchcraft or rather the occult in general. Harvest, written by Tal Brooke and Chuck Smith, relates these very facts.

All should easily have been aware of the occult significance of the hexagram, the dove and other symbolism. The upside down dove has to have been seen by some, even in connection to eastern religions. Many knew Haight Ashbury of 60’s fame and other hot beds of occult activity and symbolism throughout the Jesus Movement and onward.

Romans 6:1-2

"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?"

Helena Blavatsky, an occultist, Luciferian, magician, Mason, and founder of the Theosophical Society, along with Masonic author Albert Pike, blasphemed the Holy Spirit in their writings of this belief, that Lucifer is the holy spirit. Pike, referred to the Holy Ghost, when he wrote, "the body of the Holy Spirit, the universal Agent, [is] the Serpent..."

Cathy Burns states, "In the 28th degree of the masonic lecture, the Masonic initiates are told the IDENTICAL thing!"30. Occultist Eliphas Levi also stated, "...it is the paraclete, it is the Holy Spirit..." The word "paraclete" means "advocate" or "intercessor."31 The picture represents that teaching and means "divinity."32

New Ager, Elizabeth Van Buren wrote “The Sign of the Dove,” which is a book about the Merovingian's and Jesus. The author takes a Gnostic approach to religion and suggests that the Merovingian's were of extra-terrestrial descent. Her other works show similar thought and connect with the Rennes les Chateau heresy of Holy Blood Holy Grail. She echoes the occult blasphemy of the Dove/holy spirit and states it comes from the gnostic beliefs of the Bogomils and Cathars.

"...the Bogomils...taught that...Michael came to earth. When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan, the Holy Ghost, which was Michael appeared as a dove, and Jesus became the Christ." 33

"It is not generally known that the Dove was the symbol most revered by the Cathari...Indeed, the Cathar were called the "Faithful of the Dove," the "Friends of God." "...The Dove symbolized the Comforter, the One who would bring peace to the world one day." 34.

"In the Ancient Mysteries, the Dove was the symbol of the third person of the Creative Triad, the Trinity. It was taught that as the lower worlds were brought into being through the generative process the Dove was to be associated with those goddesses who were identified with the procreative functions. We find therefore, this pure white bird sacred to Venus, Astarte, and Isis. Not only is the Dove the emblem of the maternal instinct with its gentleness and compassion, but it is also the Messenger of the Divine Will, portraying the Power as well as the Wisdom of the Creator." 35

Like Satanist, Eliphas Levi, Van Buren, aligns the dove to the "paraclete."  "So for the Cathari, the Dove might have been not only the symbol of the Paraclete or Holy Ghost, but also the emblem of "The Book of Love" itself, written by Ionnes, John the Divine." 36

"If one accepts that the precious treasure of the Cathari was the Last Gospel of St. John, it should be noted that the true name of the Dove is Ionah, or Iönas (Jonah). John the Baptist the forerunner of Christ, was called Ioannes, and the Apostle of Love, author of the Fourth Gospel and the Apocalypse was called Ionnes, in Greece. "  37

However, Oannes in the occult is found connected to the worship of Dagon and Saturn . "In the great Assyrian temple of Assur…stood a large stone ritual basin dedicated to the god OANNES… Flanking him are 4 FISH-CLAD priests." (Johnson, p. 243) In an etching of "Assyria, 7th century BCE: FISH-CLAD priests. (Johnson, p. 245)" 38.

In "The Tomb of God," the authors show the Cathars belief to be rooted in self-fulfillment which is  no different than the root belief of dominionists and reconstructionists.

"The Cathar belief was firmly rooted in the Gnostic belief in self-fulfillment that had so alarmed the fathers of the early Churches of Rome." 39.

The author of Christianity Through the Ages, describes the heresy of the Cathars, which involved dualism.

"...The Cathari, or Albigneses...used the New Testament as a basis for their ideas, but the heretical ideas that they formulated resembled the dualistic and ascetic ideas of the Gnostic and Manichaean movements. The Albigenses believed that there was an absolute dualism between Christ, the good son of God who made the souls of men, and Satan the bad son, who was given a material body after he was cast out of heaven. Following his expulsion, Satan made the visible world..."40

Galatians 1:8-10

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

With these facts, it is surprising to read of Dave Hunt's declaration that the Cathars, Albigenses and related groups were "true Christians." In the October 1994 (p.1) issue of The Berean Call, Dave Hunt wrote:

"The Inquisitions had been underway for centuries before the Reformation, and the massacre of true Christians (known variously as Albigenses, Bogomils, Brethren, Cathari, Hussites, Vaudois and Waldenses) by the Roman Catholic Church had by then been underway for 1,000 years."

In the Questions and Answers section of the December 1994 issue, on page 3, we see his defense of his position, which had come under fire.  "Question: (Composite of Several): You have referred to the Albigenses as true Christians yet every Encyclopedia I've looked into say they were Manacheans who believed in a good God and an evil God, that they were involved in ritual suicide and immorality. How could you possibly have made such a terrible blunder.?"

"Answer: In fact the Albigenses were true Christians, but their Roman Catholic persecutors and murderers managed to destroy most of their records and to publish lies about them that have lasted to this century."

This declaration is not valid as indicated by experts such as Kurt Rudolph, an internationally recognized authority on Gnosticism. In his book "Gnosis, The Nature & History of Gnosticism", Rudolph shows that the Cathar beliefs can be traced from their source, the Manacheans, which was considered "one of the four world religions known to the history of religions." 41 Mani, the founder, was born April 14th, 216 A.D. When he was twelve years old, Mani had his first vision, "...in which his heavenly double, his "twin, his "partner" or companion," appeared. Mani saw in this the effective revelation of the 'comforter" (the Paraclete), or the "Holy Spirit" who had revealed to him the "mysteries" of his teaching...[he attempted] to reform the practice and teachings of the baptists...he had another experience at the age of 24 which constituted his actual call to be an "apostle of the light."  42

Mani's "paraclete" is no different than the 'spirit' referred to by Blavatsky, Pike and Van Buren. Rudolph records that their was intense persecution from the Zoroastrians and other groups and the history of the movement is traced through various countries including Egypt, Eastern Iran, Palestine, Syria, Northern Arabia, North Africa, Asia Minor, Central Asia, Armenia, Gaul, Spain and Italy. The teachings are also traced into China, there having openly survived at least until the 17th century. In fact, in some areas "...only from the 6th century onward does the religion disappear, though continuing to exert its influence under different guises in other sectarian circles (Paulicians, Bogomils, Catharists) ...."43

The fact that the World Council of Churches also wants to include the Albigenses and other such groups in a rewrite of the Protestant Reformation should be a clue as to how they are defining "true Christians."

Ephesians 4:4-6

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
