Jesus, who is God manifest in the flesh, had the authority
to bring in the God promised 'New Covenant' and also
referenced the "new testament" in several
Scriptures including Matthew 26:28 "For this is
my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for
the remission of sins."
new <kainos> testament
<diatheke>
From
Strong's > new <kainos>
2537. kainov kainos,
kahee-nos' of uncertain affinity; new (especially in
freshness; while 3501 is properly so with respect to
age:--new.
testament <diatheke> 1242. diayhkh diatheke,
dee-ath-ay'-kay from 1303; properly, a disposition, i.e.
(specially) a contract (especially a devisory
will):--covenant, testament.
1303. diatiyemai
diatithemai, dee-at-ith'-em-ahee >middle voice from 1223
and 5087; to put apart, i.e. (figuratively) dispose (by
assignment, compact, or bequest):--appoint, make,
testator.
The Scriptures state that all
those who belong to Jesus Christ are the "royal
priesthood'. Not pastors, not evangelists, not elders, not
Hebrew Roots leadership and no longer based on the Levite lineage. Every single person who belongs to
Jesus Christ, who is our only High Priest, becomes part of
the 'royal priesthood,' and we are called to care for one
another.[*56] [
Rev. 1:6]
1 Peter 2: 9
But ye are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of
him who hath called you out of darkness into his
marvellous light:
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the
people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have
obtained mercy.
All true
believers are now "kings and priests unto God." As priests
there is free access to the Father and we are to offer up
the sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving daily.
Instead of giving sacrifices as the Levite priesthood was
commanded to do, we are called to give spiritual sacrifices
and give this:
Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the
mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living
sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your
reasonable service.
Just as
holiness was required by the Levite priesthood, God calls us to
be 'holy as He is holy.' We have no righteousness in
ourselves, but all through Christ.
Phil
3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own
righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is
through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is
of God by faith:
The
Temple is changed, with the changing of the High Priest and
the priesthood.
Heb 9:1 Then verily the first
covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a
worldly sanctuary.
Exodus 25:8 And let them make me a sanctuary;
that I may dwell among them.
[*57]
[Lev 26:12; 16:2,
1Kings
8:10-13]
Acts
17:24 God that made the world and all things therein,
seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not
in temples made with hands; 25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he
needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and
breath, and all things;
Jesus stated that
worship would no longer be in Jerusalem or on the mount, but
would instead be spiritual.
John
14:20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye
say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to
worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the
hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor
yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye
know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is
of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when
the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit
and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship
him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must
worship him in spirit and in truth.
The temple of the Holy Spirit becomes the
bodies of those who belong to Christ, because God chooses to abide
with those who come to Christ.
John
14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you
another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot
receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be
in you...23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man
love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love
him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with
him.
our
abode <mone> 3438. monh mone, mon-ay' from 3306; a
staying, i.e. residence (the act or the place):--abode,
mansion.
1Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of
God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any
man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for
the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. [*58]
[1Co 3:1Co
6:19; 2Co 6:16; Eph 2:21-22; Heb 3:6]
1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a
spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual
sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Instead
of giving sacrifices for sin, we are called to approach
the throne of grace, through Christ, and confess our sins,
and repent of them, knowing they are forgiven because of
the final sin sacrifice of Christ.
Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find
grace to help in time of need.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the
glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the
redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through
faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the
remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance
of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his
righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier
of him which believeth in Jesus. 27 Where is boasting
then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by
the law of faith. 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is
justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
1
John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive
ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess
our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness...2:1
My little children, these things write I unto you, that
ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with
the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the
propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but
also for the sins of the whole world.
Hebrews 10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with
them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my
laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write
them;
17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no
more.
18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more
offering for sin.
No longer were the Levite priests
responsible for bearing the iniquity of Israel and
themselves. Christ bore the iniquities for us all, once for
all. But now, those who do not accept His free gift of
salvation will bear their own iniquities in God's judgment,
as was always stated throughout the Scriptures. There is no
more required sacrifice that is able to make atonement for
sin.
Galatians 6:5 For every man
shall bear his own burden.
Instead
of having to be taught by the priests, we are told that
the Holy Spirit will lead us into all Truth.
1
John 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of
him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach
you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all
things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath
taught you, ye shall abide in him.
As
prophesied, God will teach all, and dependence on man is
not to be. [*59]
[Jer 17:7; Ps 2:12; 34:8; 125:1; 146:5; Pr
16:20; Isa 30:18] We are to fully depend on God for all,
while knowing He has provided support and helps through
the brethren, so we can all grow in grace and knowledge of
the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to study to show ourselves
approved, and use the Sword of the Spirit which is the
Word of God, to learn to discern between good and evil.
The high priest had to confess all the iniquities
of the children of Israel to the Lord, laid hands on the
animal sacrifices, and also transferred the sins to a live scapegoat, which was
released into the wilderness.
With Christ, the people, both Jew and Gentile, laid hands on
Jesus at the appointed time and not before, and then He was
sacrificed. The priest would have sprinkled the blood of the
sacrificed animal on the mercy seat, while Christ went
directly to the Father and the Holy of Holies in Heaven to
accomplish this Himself. Jesus, our High Priest, makes
intercession for us.
Hebrews 7:24 But this man,
because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable
priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to
the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever
liveth to make intercession for them.
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit
also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we
should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself
maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot
be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth
what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh
intercession for the saints according to the will of
God...34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that
died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at
the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for
us.
The two sacrifices for
sin were the same,
but one was on earth and the other was in the heavenly
realm. Except, that this time, God gave Himself to die for
His children.[*60]
[Isa 53:5-6,11; 2Co 5:21; 1Ti 1:15; Heb 1:3] Yet being God, Christ rose from the dead and
is alive, and sits at the right hand of the Father, proof
that He is God. After Christ's sacrifice God
allowed the destruction of the temple, just as Christ had
predicted in
Matthew 24.
[*61] The
Second Temple was in fact leveled to the ground by 70 CE.
With the destruction of the Temple, there has been no way to
offer atonement or sin sacrifices or a Passover sacrifice according to the
Torah. God
removed the need of
the animal sacrifices and the way of doing it according to the
Law which He had initially given. Instead,
repentance and prayer of a contrite heart, believing what
God had said would take place and did take place, is what is
needed.
Isaiah 53:4 Surely he
hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we
did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was
bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned
every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him
the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was
afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as
a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her
shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. 8 He was
taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall
declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the
land of the living: for the transgression of my people
was he stricken. 9 And he made his grave with the
wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had
done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.
10 Yet it pleased the
LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou
shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see
his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of
the LORD shall prosper in his hand.11 He shall see of
the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his
knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for
he shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore will I
divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide
the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out
his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made
intercession for the transgressors.
Mark 15:28 And the scripture
was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the
transgressors. [*62]
[Lu 22:37]
Instead of giving the firstfruits of the increase for a
tithe, we in fact are the firstfruits of Christ, and are of
a spiritual increase, of souls.
James 1:18 Of his own will
begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind
of firstfruits of his creatures.
Romans 8:21 Because the
creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of
corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and
travaileth in pain together until now. 23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the
firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within
ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption
of our body.
1 Corinthians 16:15 I beseech you,
brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the
firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted
themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
Instead of being unable to approach
the inner sanctuary for fear of death, we are allowed access
to the throne of grace through Jesus Christ.[*63]
[Ex 30:10; Le
16:2,11-12,15,34] That is why the veil was ripped from the
top down when Christ was crucified. It was Almighty God who tore it
away, to allow access to Himself.
Matthew 27:51 And, behold, the
veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the
bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
Hebrews 10:18 Now where remission
of these is, there is no more offering for sin. 19 Having
therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by
the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he
hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say,
his flesh;
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I
am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto
the Father, but by me.
The Apostle Paul also
wrote about these concepts in Galatians, noting that God's
promise to Abraham and his seed was not made conditional
with the keeping of the law, but rather the fulfillment of
the promises was dependent on the coming Mediator and New Covenant.. For example:
Galatians 3:18 For if the inheritance
be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it
to Abraham by promise.
19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of
transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the
promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the
hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of
one, but God is one.
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God
forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have
given life, verily righteousness should have been by the
law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin,
that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given
to them that believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law,
shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be
revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to
bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a
schoolmaster.

Ro 3; 4; 9; 11:6]
Despite the
changes that came about with Christ dying once for all, and
the change in the Priesthood and the Laws, there are many
Christians and Hebraic roots adherents who are looking
forward to the reinstitution of the Temple and the
sacrifices. Many do so in
belief they are upholding the Jews who have not accepted
Christ as the awaited Messiah. Some
in fact, desire the rebuilding of the Temple so that they
can again make sacrifice for sins, using the argument that
there is no more covering for "intentional sin". This
argument is supported by quoting part of a passage out of
context, and the 'red heifer' is apparently in place for
purification rituals.
That is in sharp contrast to some rabbinic
teachings that state that even if the Temple was rebuilt
there will be no more animal sacrifices:
"...With the
destruction of the Temple, the rabbis state that prayer
and good deeds took the place of sacrifice..."
"...human conduct will have
advanced to such high standards that there will no
longer be need for animal sacrifices to atone for sins.
Only nonanimal sacrifices (grains, for example) to
express gratitude to God would remain. There is a
Midrash (rabbinic teaching based on Jewish values and
tradition) that states: "In the Messianic era, all
offerings will cease except the thanksgiving offering,
which will continue forever. This seems consistent with
the belief of Rabbi Kook and others, based on the
prophecy of Isaiah (11:6-9), that people and animals
will be vegetarian in that time, and "none shall hurt
nor destroy in all My Holy mountain."
[Frequently Asked Questions About Animal Sacrifices and
the Messianic Period by Richard H. Schwartz, Ph.D;
www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/vegsacrifices.html]
Many Messianics and Hebrew Roots advocates have even stated that Jesus will lead the
sacrifices once He returns, while failing to recognize
that Hebrews clearly states that there will be no more
sacrifices.
Heb 5:3 And by
reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for
himself, to offer for sins. 4 And no man taketh this
honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was
Aaron. 5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made
an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my
Son, to day have I begotten thee.
6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for
ever after the order of Melchisedec.
10:18 Now where
remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the
holiest by the blood of Jesus,
Many do not
recognize that Christ was the final sacrifice, so they desire
to follow the Law of Moses. The reinstatement of the Temple
and the sacrifices for sins, would also necessitate the
reinstatement of the Levite Priesthood and of course the
care of them through the tithe Law. That would necessitate
the having of a different High Priest. And for those who
belong to Jesus Christ,
there is only one High Priest, as proclaimed in the Word of
God.
If a
believer, therefore, goes to or desires that Temple, it is an affront
to Christ's finished work.
Jesus clearly told us:
Mt 12:6 But
I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the
temple.
God in fact many times
has stated that He never desired sacrifices and offerings,
but rather contrite hearts and a living relationship with Him. Even
the rabbinic commentators noted that sacrifice was not an
actual commandment, but rather something that was to be
given willingly:
"...Rashi
indicated that God did not want the Israelites to bring
sacrifices; it was their choice. He bases this on the
haphtorah (portion from the Prophets) read on the Sabbath
when the book of Leviticus which discusses sacrifices is
read:
I have not
burdened thee with a meal-offering, Nor wearied thee
with frankincense. (Isaiah 43:23)
Biblical
commentator David Kimhi (1160-1235) also stated that the
sacrifices were voluntary. He ascertained this from the
words of Jeremiah:
For I spoke not
unto your fathers, nor commanded them on the day that I
brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning
burnt-offerings or sacrifices; but this thing I
commanded them, saying, "Obey my voice, and I will be
your God, and ye shall be my people; and walk ye in all
the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well
unto you. (Jeremiah 7:22-23)
David Kimchi, notes
that nowhere in the Ten Commandments is there any
reference to sacrifice, and even when sacrifices are first
mentioned (Lev. 1:2) the expression used is "when any man
of you bringeth an offering," the first Hebrew we ki being
literally "if", implying that it was a voluntary act. "
[Frequently Asked Questions About Animal Sacrifices and
the Messianic Period by Richard H. Schwartz, Ph.D;
www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/vegsacrifices.html]
The Scriptures show
where God stated this concept and Jesus, who is God manifest
in the flesh, reiterated the teaching:
Hosea 6:6 For I
desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God
more than burnt offerings.
Matthew 12:7 But if
ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not
sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
[*65]
[Mic 6:6-8; Isa 1:11-16; Am 5:21-4; Pr.
21: 3; 1Sa 15:22; Ps 50:8-9; Ec 5:1; Isa 1:11; Jer 22:16;
Joh 17:3]
Matthew 9:13
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy,
and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the
righteous, but sinners to repentance.
What is
missed by those who say they believe Christ, is that just as
we rewrite or update our wills over the years, as our
circumstances change, there are concepts brought forward
from the original document and rewritten to cover the
changes that have taken place. Some concepts can no longer
be used, but others must be adjusted to the changed
circumstances. But any preceding wills are void or annulled,
and the New is the one that is binding. Not because the
original was not good and valid when written and enforced,
but because of the need for change. And in this case, by
God's promise and decree.
