Universal Tongues and Manifestations

2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

"Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved."

After his Pentecostal experience and "Baptism," Marcus Bach was intrigued with the idea that other faiths might also manifest glossolalia. Keeping his activities and ideas hidden from his Pentecostal friend Joseph and also his pastor, he embarked on research to find other groups who spoke in tongues or glossolalia. His desire was to show the universalism of this manifestation which he so enjoyed. His research documented that the Pentecostal glossolalia manifestation had pre-Christian roots.

"....I learned some startling things. For example, it had never been pointed out to me until I prowled through historical commentaries that glossolalia had pre-Christian antecedents and that the phenomenon was by no means uncommon in ancient rituals where pagan gods were worshiped. Pentecostal leaders may have known this, but Pentecostal followers never. Nor would they have been interested. Nor would they have cared. Not if they had the rapture. But now that the door had been opened, I was eager to make my own discoveries." p. 72 Bolding added

"It was thrilling for me to know that glossolalia did have these pre-Christian roots. That made the phenomenon greater, not less great. That made it more meaningful because it made it universal. I had a feeling I was taking my Baptism to the ancients and matching my experience with theirs. I was witnessing in a new and vivid way the romance of my expanding faith. It was not always easy, for I learned that in the Eleusinian and Dionysian festivals of ancient Greece the glossolalic sounds were frequently made by the tongue alone. No voice. No speaking. Simply tongue-talk."

"When the exuberance of the worshipers reached rapturous heights, the incredible, sometimes musical utterances, began. They were like sounding brass and tinkling cymbal. The speakers became the center of attraction. Initiates listened enthralled and often they, too, became overpowered and burst into a babble of sounds. Something we did not have in Pentecostalism."

"These Greek festivals flourished during the Golden Age, the prehistoric period ruled by Cronus, god of the harvest. In these extravaganzas, held in spring and fall at planting and reaping time, devotees not only spoke in tongues but were also baptized in rivers. They sang and clapped their hands just as we did when we felt the Spirit. This link with the past was thrilling, and one night, after hours of reading, I dreamed about these festivals and saw myself as a glossolalia worshiper of Bacchus and Zeus." p, 72-73

Analyzing the difficulty many have with sharing scientific data and observations and reconciling those ideas with religious belief, Bach empathized with that struggle. He also noted that many have great difficulty with dealing with academic authority and conclusions drawn from those studies. His remarks included the concept of new age universality.

"...I shared his [all students] struggle but I also shared with him my thoughts of identification with all life, all faiths, all cultures.. I often relived my conflict and my compromise between the universality of a phenomenon and my induced passion in the exclusiveness of the Pentecostal fire" p. 73-74

God views academic elitism and the "wisdom of man" in the following manner.

1 Corinthians 3:18-21 "Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men..."

Continuing with his research of glossolalia, Bach wrote of the Oracle of Delphi and took incredible liberty with the Old Testament:

"...the path of glossolalia led from the festivals of Eleusis to Delphi where the oracle sat in the sulphurous mist, her throne the tripod of Apollo, whose messenger she was...Here she prophesied and often when the ecstasy came upon her, her voice was taken over by Apollo and her words would be unknown even to herself. Men said she was intoxicated with the presence of the god, but a city grew up around Delphi because of her. Delphi-where men drank of the sacred stream and stood at the water's edge and spoke in tongues.

Understanding the oracle at Delphi helped me to understand the Old Testament references to the nabi, who were the babbling Saul, the son of Kish, met a group of these nebi'im at Gibeah and how they were prophesying and filled with ecstasy and speaking in tongues and Saul stood in their midst, I stood with him. He was experiencing his first exposure to the gift of God as it comes in glossolalia, not, of course, the Christian Pentecostal type, but the gift nonetheless...Clearly glossolalia had its origin in unrecorded history and then found its way into the Old Testament..." p. 75

Dr. Bach wrote previously that when he was babbling the 'heavenish' language, the source was the Holy Spirit--God himself. We know that God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. The purpose of tongues, i.e. other languages, at Pentecost was to share the glories of God, which included telling about Jesus Christ. That is Scriptural. Would the Holy Spirit, which is the Eternal, Holy Spirit of Almighty God, manifest the "gift of tongues" for occult rituals and worship of other "gods" and also manifest that same gift of tongues to worship Himself, who alone is God?

James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

1 Peter 1:23 "Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever."

Romans 1:3-4 "Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection of the dead:"

Bach continues his teaching by disseminating the idea of evolution of beliefs, rather than simply faith in and obedience to Jesus Christ. He then presents his un-Biblical understanding of Pentecost and the Apostles.

"...Long before the coming of churches...before men were certain about the object of their worship, an inner awareness of something higher and greater than themselves filled their hearts with rapture and their tongues with praise. This became an accepted practice...So it was with Saul. And so it had been with me...I...directed the orchestra at the services and sometimes spoke in tongues, but never now without a new identification. Now when "tongues" broke out in ecstatical Pentecostal meetings honoring God and Jesus, I heard it in Phrygian festivals praising Attis and Cybele, in Syrian services paying homage to Adonis and Aphrodite, in Egyptian rituals where Isis and Osiris were worshiped, and in Roman festivals where, on the occasion of the Saturnalia held in late December, it inspired the exchange of gifts..."

"...these haunted thoughts followed me into sleep, I awoke with a surge of ecstasy, sat up in bed and in the darkness assured myself that into the twilight setting of these ancient faiths came Christianity at a time when the mind of man had been awakened to a higher nature, to the hope of communion with the "true God" and to the need for salvation. Christianity, my faith, alive with the passion of Christ, made dynamic by the Upper Room, bothered me that Jesus Himself never felt the need for it or uttered glossolalia in any form." p.76

"When would they learn that the nature of ecstasy increases by virtue of its universality? When would they recognize that since glossolalia was demonstrated in pagan times, it took on added significance when the Apostles "Christianized" it? The fact that it was employed by the commonly "unsaved" made more significant the fact that Paul purified it." P. 77

"So the story of glossolalia brought me to the "Pentecost of the Upper Room" and into the record of tongues-speaking in the early Christian church. Actually the New Testament had little to say about glossolalia in churches other than the congregation at Corinth. Why was this?" p. 77

Pastor Doug Dugan of the Fellowship Baptist Church,  who asked the question, "If speaking in tongues is the evidence of the fulness of the spirit then my question is what spirit?  Because the devil’s crowd is filled with a spirit that moves them to speak in tongues too!" ...The use of tongues in the Bible was always the use of known languages."

Bach reflected on the various viewpoints of tongues, those advocating for and those in the Pentecostal circle believing they ceased. His arguments took him into further claims that the beliefs of heretical groups were actually Christian.

"...There was no doubting the historic fact that in the second century of the Christian Era a group of religious known as Montanists were endowed with glossolalia. Eusibius, one of the early Church Fathers, went on record to say that the Montanists "raved and babbled and uttered strange unintelligible sounds." Montanus, founder of the group, a native of Phrygia had been a priest in the temple of Cybele, goddess of nature, but after his conversion to Christianity he proclaimed himself a reformer of the apostolic church...he was a link between glossolalia as it was found among the idolaters and as it was practiced among the chosen of God..." p. 80

" Dr. Cutten's book on The Psychological Phenomena of Christianity, the late 1930's...Cutten cited the fact that among the early Mormons there were those who had 'fits of speaking all the different Indian dialects, which no one could understand."..."Those Mormons who speak in tongues are generally the most illiterate among the 'saints,' such as cannot command words as quick as they would wish...they break forth in the first sound their tongues can articulate, not matter what it is." p. 80-81

"Examining the records of the Society for Psychical Research, Cutten came up with the evidence that the Irvingites (The Catholic Apostolic Church) engaged in glossolalia. "The Holy Spirit, "said the report, "uses the tongue of man in a manner which neither his own intellect can dictate nor that of any other man comprehend." p. 81

"The Shakers, too had been caught up in the gift of tongues. So had the Spiritualists. So had the Doukhobors, Russian religionists, who, in 1900, had trekked across Canadian wilds in search of the Kingdom of God." p. 81 [Meaning they were looking for a New Jerusalem--the Kingdom of Heaven on earth]

"...I felt a oneness with all of these people--Mormon, Doukhobor, Irvingite...I felt such a nearness even to Montanus and Arius and Nestorius..." p. 81

Dr. Bach described the inclusion of these "little known" religions into his University classes, relating the problem of keeping the peace when including the teaching of the "radical" groups such as:

"...Christian Science which stressed spiritual healing, the Unity movement which believed in reincarnation, Jehovah's Witnesses...Baha'is who had a new prophet to add to Jesus, Spiritualists who communicated with the dead, and Mormons, Shakers, and Pentecostals who advocated the Baptism and audaciously spoke in tongues...groups had never been recognized by the academic community because the established interests felt they were simply spawning a new Reformation. The fact is, they were." p. 114

"...I brought their representatives to the campus, and not Christian advocates only, but also the spokesmen for non-Christian groups Zen, Yoga, Vedanta....They came to town to visit our classes. We superimposed a new motto on the School of Religion's "Unity in Diversity, " by claiming that "All roads that lead to God are good." We revised the academic axiom, "Cooperation without Compromise."..." p. 114 -115

Describing how his research became a worldwide venture through the years, Bach related,

"...I made trips to Africa and Haiti, I was often to think about the ecstasy of the Spirit as we had found it in the Holiness groups, and as it once had conquered me. One night in Haiti a white voodoo priest, Stanley Reser, took me to a ritual...As the tempo of the service heightened and the fervor of the worshipers fired up, I watched...entranced. The writhing, pirouetting figures, devotees with flailing hands, blissful faces etched with sweat, eyes euphorious in the lantern light, enchanted voices intoning an unknown language--these Haitian peasants would be construed by church and campus as pagan worshipers drunk with rum and witched with dope, but I saw myself in them when I was drunk with the joy and rapture of the Holy Ghost.

Let the drums throb out their passion for the celestial serpent ...and God bless them for their orchestration...There was a passion in all this that I not only felt and responded to, but that had meaning down to the hard core of my being. There was something I saw with an inner eye: a gospel printery..." p. 115 [Italics in original]

Bach also discussed the use of LSD, the theology of Leary and the eastern religious philosophies. The purpose of all Eastern religions, " the aim of LSD, said Leary, "is to get high. That is, to expand your consciousness and find ecstasy and revelation within." p. 157

Amazingly Dr. Bach recounted the idea of tongues or glossolalia forming the basis of an ecumenical movement. Dr. Bach wrote, "...I recalled that there were those among the Pentecostals who believed with Du Plessis that tongues could form the basis for a new ecumenicity." p. 159 [Bolding added]

The article "Shepherds In Disguise,” and many others disclosed that many of the leaders in the Charismatic, Evangelical, Hebrew Roots and Pentecostal movements as having an ecumenical goal. We also concluded, through evaluation of various documents, that the Charismatic movement was being used to prepare all denominations for acceptance of Pentecostal tongues and other related manifestations. These facts give the needed reminder that we must carefully evaluate all that we believe against Biblical truth.

While traveling in New Delhi, Bach entered into 'transcendental meditation.' Like the New Age techniques of Richard Foster and Renovaré discussed previously,  Bach described his experience with mantras and meditation. His conclusions echo the New Age concept of all people of all faiths having Christ and "the Christ within."

" teacher had whispered a secret mantra to me, a word to help me find the absolute, the still-point in my restless spirit, and had initiated me into the SRM (Spiritual Regeneration Movement)...." "Guru" was not quite the right term...He was Padam Perkesh, secretary to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi...His most famous disciples, the Beatles, had just left him..." p. 170-171

"...There was something we were missing in meditation...Thoughts of the Christ came to me, a vision as vivid and deep as any I had ever experienced...He was beggar and Brahmin priest. He was East and West and everyone and every place, not as they appeared to be but as they were. At some point in every life everyone found himself in Him and walked with Him to both the cross and the glory. It was only a matter of time and timing. The Christ in every guise. The Christ in every faith. The Christ in every man..." p. 172-173

Discussing the embracement of various occult or new age teachings by Christians and those of other faiths, Dr. Bach questioned whether the ecumenicity sought by many was the need to agree with essentials or more to the point, be simply ecumenical in spirit.

We've witnessed the advent of the meetings and resulting agreements of 'essentials' in such documents as Evangelicals and Catholics Together. The ecumenical 'spirit' is also being witnessed as more approve of those various documents and agree to "Unity in Diversity," as well as embracing the Hebrew Roots Movement and each of the Four Waves and manifestations of varying degrees.

"...Many actually became more dedicated to their churches while practicing their newly found teachings as part of an auxiliary discipline. [meaning Christians embracing Yoga, Zen, etc.] Could this be the new and needed approach to spiritual understanding?"

"...There was much talk in religious circles about ecumenicity, about churches and groups getting together and resolving their doctrinal differences and emphasizing their agreements on "essentials," but what had always been desperately needed was an ecumenicity not of polity or creed, but of the spirit. Could it be that the coming of these "international faiths" and the evidence of the charismatic renewal were part of the new revival?...Had I been right in affirming throughout my years of research, "All roads that lead to God are good"?" p. 175-176 [Bolding added]

"...In my current work as the director of the Foundation for Spiritual Understanding, for which I had left the University of Iowa, the varieties of spiritual experiences that people shared with me were almost beyond belief...I learned how lives are changed not only through religion as such, but through sensitivity seminars, encounter groups, psychic sessions, through visions, dreams, and even by way of political and economic twists and turns in life..." p. 177

"From Seattle came a letter from a friend that said, "I received the Holy Spirit form the laying on of hands. I collapsed on the floor and it felt like about 500 volts. There was a spasm of pressure and violet and red light. I nearly lost consciousness....Roman Catholicism, experiencing outbursts of glossolalia at Notre Dame University and finding the Baptism of the Holy Spirit of sufficient interest to hold a conference at the University of Dayton, a Catholic school, had a competent spokesman in Father Kilian McDonnell. "The Pentecostals," he said, "have restored the possibility of knowing God and experiencing mystery in a way directly related to man's conscious and historical self. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit conveys power in an exciting religious and emotional experience of overpowering love..." p. 179 [Bolding and underline added]

Has the gospel been hidden or lost that it was not until the Pentecostal movement manifested itself, that the ability to know God was revealed? Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:1-7:

"But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them that believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

Dr. Bach continued to share what he determined were wonderful events in the advancement of the Pentecostal manifestations.

"...Bringham's Inter-Church Renewal Ministry was spearhead a modern Pentecost for "an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that will rock the world." p. 180

Where in all of Scripture is the concept that we plan what God does and when it's going to happen? That we can and should attempt to initialize what can only be what God Himself purposes? That we have any control over directing who and when someone accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

1 Corinthians 2:16 "For who hath know the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."

Jesus said in John 6:44, 65 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day...And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father."

Romans 9:16,18-21 "So then it is not if him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy...Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. Thou wilt say then unto me, Why dost he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? "

Isaiah 46:9-11 "Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:...the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it."

Bach continued his discussion on the various meanings of revival and embracement of glossolalia, including Billy Graham's comments at the time.

"Billy Graham went on record saying he would be surprised if these revivalistic outbursts were not signs that Christ would return within a decade. "It is my hunch," he said, "that we are currently seeing the end of a period of history and also the end of the age..." [Note: Bach's book was published in 1969] p. 180

"Was the Baptism a sign of charism or hysteria, of Spirit or self, of God or man? It was difficult!....By a process...there was added a new world-view or at least a new self-view into my thinking...Everyone, I felt sure, had at some time had his "Holy Spirit" encounter to which he gave whatever name he wished. Somewhere along the way of life he expressed himself in "glossolalia" no matter what he called it or how he explained it psychologically or otherwise. The "Upper Room" was pure mystique, unique in Christianity but known to followers of every faith. It was increasingly clear that even the once-exclusive "consciousness of Christ" was now becoming common property of all mankind in all religions, the objectification of man's quest..." p. 188

Salvation through Jesus Christ is offered to all of mankind. However, "consciousness of Christ" is not. Only those who accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will have the Holy Spirit. The spirit that many are embracing is not of God.

1 Timothy 1:15 "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief."

1 John 2:2 "And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world."

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."

1 Timothy 2:3-6 "For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time."

Romans 8:9-10 “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

So, again we must ask, why the push for tongues and acceptance of it throughout Christianity and the occult? There has to be not only the factual information above and throughout the other articles, but there must be a Scriptural reason for the increase and desire to have this manifestation as a validation one has 'the spirit'.

In the following Scripture, we see that prophecies shall fail or cease, and that tongues or languages also will cease at some point.

I Corinthians 13:8-10

"Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away."

If we put this in the context of tongues being other languages, it could provide a reason for the absolute need of unintelligible tongues that are manifesting throughout the movements we've discussed.  The phrase "when that which is perfect is come" can only be referring to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ coming. In Verse 12 of that passage, Paul wrote, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." In other words, when that which is perfect is come, Jesus Christ, we'll see Him face to face, and we will see ourselves as He sees us.

In order for that event to correlate with the tongues ceasing, one must see what Scripture has to reveal further. Referring to the day of the Lord, Zephaniah 3:8-9 "Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent."

After God has poured out His wrath upon the earth, after the Great Tribulation, God is going to undo what happened at the tower of Babel. That is, He is going to un-confound the languages so all have a common pure language to praise Him. Satan must try to duplicate what God has purposed. The fact that there is now the appearance of this common tongues speaking which no one understands, but which sounds the same whether coming from a charismatic or a voodoo priest, goes against Biblical truth.

In Psalm 81:5, Joseph, who was very familiar with the Egyptian language heard a language in Egypt that he could not understand. "This he ordained in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out through the land of Egypt: where I heard a language that I understood not." It is possible the unknown language is what is referred to in verse 9, which is in reference to the worship of strange gods. " There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god." The reference shows worship of a strange god resulted in the manifestation of the 'god' inside the person, or in other words, the person is possessed by that spirit.

We are reminded that when Christ comes, he will be seen by all. Revelation 1:7 "Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen."

If one reviews Isaiah 19, we see how God has viewed Egypt. Verse 1-2 "The burden of Egypt. Behold, the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud, and shall come into Egypt: and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it. And I will set the Egyptians against the Egyptians: and they shall fight every one against his brother, and every one against his neighbour; city against city, and kingdom against kingdom." v3 And the spirit of Egypt shall fail in the midst thereof; and I will destroy the counsel thereof: and they shall seek to the idols, and to the charmers, and to them that have familiar spirits, and to the wizards."

Verse 14: " The LORD hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit."

Verse 17-21 "And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it. In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of Canaan, and swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.
In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD. And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them.
And the LORD shall be known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day, and shall do sacrifice and oblation; yea, they shall vow a vow unto the LORD, and perform it."

Egypt will serve the Lord only AFTER the Great Tribulation, and we know that the common language that will be instituted by God, will happen after the Great tribulation.

Isaiah 19: 22-25  " And the LORD shall smite Egypt: he shall smite and heal it: and they shall return even to the LORD, and he shall be entreated of them, and shall heal them.
In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.
In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land: Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance."

We can conclude that the common tongues taking place today throughout the movements we've discussed and the occult, is a duplication of what God will implement during the Millenium.
Those who have sought our Lord Jesus Christ with an honest heart and yet are snared into clinging to various manifestations, particularly tongues, must seek the Lord. In complete and honest seeking of truth, each must reject anything  in our lives that might be offensive to God, or, in the case of manifestations of spiritual 'gifts', removal of those gifts that are not of God.

Our hearts desire must be to please our Lord in everything we do and say and that will be with complete desire of Biblical obedience in all areas. One cannot ask for that removal with the secret hope that 'it' remains. That asking must be with a broken and contrite heart. Nothing will change unless that desire is honestly there.

James 1:5-8

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

If we want to keep something in our lives that is not of God--He will not remove it.

Psalm 106:15  And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

However, He will chastise and correct those who belong to Him.

Proverbs 3:12  For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Hebrews 12:6-11

For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

2 Corinthians 13:5

"Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?"
